> Chapter 1064

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka, near Rajagaha.

> At that time, many monks, having put on their robes and taken up their bowls in the morning, entered the city of Rajagaha to seek alms. They heard that Devadatta had gained such offerings and support, even to the extent that five hundred people had formed a separate assembly to receive his offerings. After finishing their alms round, they returned to the monastery, set down their robes and bowls, washed their feet, and went to where the Buddha was. They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet, stepped back and sat to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, this morning we put on our robes, took up our bowls, and entered Rajagaha to seek alms. We heard that Devadatta has gained such offerings and support, even to the extent that five hundred people have formed a separate assembly to receive his offerings."

> The Buddha told the monks, "Do not speak of the offerings that Devadatta receives. Why? Because Devadatta, in receiving offerings separately, is destroying himself in this life and will also be destroyed in the next. Just as the plantain, bamboo, or reed bears fruit and then dies, and will also wither the following year, so too does Devadatta, upon receiving offerings, bring ruin upon himself in this life and in the next. Just as a mule that conceives is sure to die, so too does Devadatta, upon receiving offerings, bring ruin upon himself in this life and in the next. That foolish Devadatta, for as long as he receives offerings, will experience suffering and harm for a long time. Therefore, monks, you should learn this: 'Even if offerings arise for me, let me not become attached to them.'" At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses:

> The banana tree bears fruit and dies, Bamboo and reeds likewise meet their end. The mule, pregnant, perishes in labor, And the person caught in greed destroys themselves. Those who constantly walk in unrighteous ways, Even with much learning, cannot escape foolishness. Day by day, their good qualities wither away, Like a stem drying up, its roots also harmed.

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
