> Section 1081

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park near Varanasi.

> At that time, the World-Honored One, having put on his robes and taken up his bowl, entered the city of Vārāṇasī to beg for alms. Meanwhile, a certain monk, also dressed in robes and carrying his bowl, had entered the city for alms. As he stood at the base of a tree by the roadside, unwholesome thoughts arose in him, rooted in harmful desire.

> At that time, the World-Honored One saw that monk sitting under a tree, harboring unwholesome thoughts and clinging to harmful desires. He said to him: "Monk! Monk! Do not plant seeds of suffering that give rise to a foul stench and ooze with defilement. If a monk plants such seeds of suffering, producing a foul smell and leaking with impurities, it is impossible to prevent maggots and flies from gathering around him!"

> At that moment, that monk thought to himself: "The World-Honored One knows the evil thoughts in my mind." He immediately became terrified, and the hairs on his body stood on end.

> At that time, the World-Honored One finished his alms round in the city and returned to the monastery. He put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, and entered his chamber to sit in meditation. In the afternoon, he arose from meditation and went to the assembly of monks. Seated on a prepared seat before the congregation, he addressed the monks: "This morning, wearing my robe and carrying my bowl, I entered the city for alms. I saw a monk sitting beneath a tree, harboring unwholesome thoughts, indulging in harmful desires. Upon seeing him, I immediately told him: 'Monk! Monk! Do not plant seeds of suffering, which give rise to foul odors and ooze with poisonous sap. If a monk plants seeds of suffering, giving rise to foul odors and oozing with poisonous sap, it is impossible that flies and maggots will not gather around him!' At that moment, that monk thought to himself: 'The Buddha already knows what is in my mind.' Filled with shame and fear, his heart raced and his hair stood on end, and he walked away down the path."

> Then a certain monk rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, bared his right shoulder, and with palms together said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, what is the seed of suffering? What is the foul stench of birth? What is the oozing of fluids? What is the infestation of maggots and flies?"

> The Buddha told the monks: "Anger and resentment are the seeds of suffering. The pleasures of the five senses are like rotting filth. Failing to restrain oneself at the six points of sensory contact is like a flowing stream of pus. When one does not restrain these points of contact, greed, worry, and all kinds of unwholesome thoughts compete to arise—these are the maggots and flies." At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> If the senses are not guarded, Desire arises from them— This is the seed of suffering. Like oozing foul fluids, Thoughts and perceptions, their scents, Cling to unwholesome craving. In villages or in solitude, By day or by night, Practice the pure life, keeping distance— Until you reach the end of suffering. When the mind is still within, Truth becomes clear and certain. Resting and waking, you'll find ease; Harmful pests and flies are gone. The wise walk this path, Well-spoken, the noble way. Understanding the Eightfold Path, You will not return to another body.

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
