> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, King Pasenadi and the kings of seven other nations, together with their ministers, all gathered and discussed among themselves: “Among the five objects of desire, which is the foremost?” One person said, “Sight is the foremost.” Others said that sound, smell, taste, or touch was the foremost. Then someone among them said, “Each of us claims our own preference is the foremost, but in the end, there is no decisive verdict. Let us go to the World-Honored One and ask him about this matter. Whatever the World-Honored One teaches, we should all remember it together.”

> At that time, King Pasenadi, along with seven other kings, ministers, and their retinues, came to where the Buddha was. They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet, stepped back, and sat to one side. Then King Pasenadi said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! We seven kings and our ministers were discussing together: 'Among the five objects of desire, which is the most excellent?' Some said forms were superior, some said sounds were superior, some said scents were superior, some said tastes were superior, and some said touches were superior. In the end, there was no agreement. So we have come to ask the World-Honored One—which of these is truly the most excellent?"

> The Buddha told the kings, “Each of you may follow your own preferences. I have more to say to you on this matter. This is why I speak of the pleasures of the five desires. There are people who delight in a particular form and cling to that one alone, finding complete satisfaction in it. Even if there were other superior forms beyond it, they would not care for them, would not touch or look at them, saying, ‘What I love is the finest, nothing surpasses it.’ Just as with those who love forms, so it is with sounds, fragrances, flavors, and tactile sensations. Whatever one is attached to, one declares it to be the best, rejoicing and delighting in it. Even if something more excellent appears, it is not what they desire, and they will not touch or look at it, saying only, ‘What I love is the most excellent and sublime—there is nothing equal to it, nothing above it.’”
