> (1170)

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was staying in the country of Kosambi, in the Ghositārāma Park.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Suppose there is a leper whose four limbs are covered with festering sores. If he enters a thicket of reeds and grasses, he will be wounded by the sharp leaves and thorns, and his pain will multiply. In the same way, foolish ordinary people, through the six sense contacts, experience all kinds of suffering just like this. Just as the leper, wounded by the sharp leaves and thorns, oozes pus and blood, so too the foolish ordinary person, whose nature is harsh and violent, when touched through the six sense contacts, gives rise to anger, and foul words pour out, just like the leper. Why is that? Because the mind of the foolish, unlearned ordinary person is like a leper's sore."

> I will now explain discipline and lack of discipline. What is lack of discipline? An untaught, foolish ordinary person sees a sight with the eye. For a pleasing sight, they give rise to greed and attachment. For an unpleasing sight, they give rise to anger and hatred. Then, one after another, many kinds of thoughts and perceptions arise and continue without stopping. They do not see the dangers in this. Even if they do see the dangers, they cannot remove them. The same applies to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Monks, this is called lack of discipline. What is discipline? A well-taught noble disciple sees a sight with the eye. For a pleasing sight, they do not give rise to thoughts of desire. For an unpleasing sight, they do not give rise to thoughts of anger. One after another, many kinds of thoughts and perceptions do not arise and continue. They see the dangers in sights. Having seen the dangers, they are able to let go and break free. The same applies to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. This is called discipline.
