> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka, near Rajagaha.

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to the monks: "You should focus your minds with effort and, at the appropriate times, contemplate three aspects. What are the three? At times, contemplate the aspect of calming. At times, contemplate the aspect of uplifting. At times, contemplate the aspect of letting go. "If a monk contemplates only the aspect of calming, his mind will become depressed and sluggish. If he contemplates only the aspect of uplifting, his mind will become restless and agitated. If he contemplates only the aspect of letting go, he will not attain Right Concentration and will not exhaust the taints.

> "When that monk contemplates the sign of calming from time to time, the sign of uplifting from time to time, and the sign of equanimity from time to time, his mind becomes rightly concentrated and all taints are exhausted. It is like a skilled goldsmith or a goldsmith's apprentice who places raw gold in a furnace and increases the fire, blowing the bellows from time to time, sprinkling water from time to time, and letting both be from time to time. If he were to pump the bellows continuously, the raw gold in that very spot would burn up entirely. If he were to sprinkle water continuously, the raw gold in that very spot would become hard and rigid. If he were to let both be continuously, the raw gold in that very spot would remain uncooked and thus be useless. Therefore, a skilled goldsmith or a goldsmith's apprentice blows the bellows from time to time, sprinkles water from time to time, and lets both be from time to time with that raw gold. In this way, the raw gold becomes evenly tempered and can be used for whatever purpose is needed. In the same way, monk! When you focus your mind with skillful effort and contemplate and recollect these three signs from time to time, you will reach the exhaustion of the taints."
