如是我聞：

> Thus have I heard:

一時，佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

時，有天子容色絕妙，於後夜時來詣佛所，稽首佛足，退坐一面。其身光明遍照祇樹給孤獨園。

> At that time, a heavenly being of extraordinary beauty came to the Buddha's presence in the latter part of the night. After bowing respectfully at the Buddha's feet, they sat to one side. The radiance of their body illuminated the entire Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park.

時，彼天子說偈問佛：

> At that time, a heavenly being addressed the Buddha with a verse, asking:

「何法起應滅？ 何生應防護？何法應當離？ 等觀何得樂？」

爾時，世尊說偈答言：

「瞋恚起應滅， 貪生逆防護，無明應捨離， 等觀真諦樂。欲生諸煩惱， 欲為生苦本，調伏煩惱者， 眾苦則調伏。調伏眾苦者， 煩惱亦調伏。」

時，彼天子復說偈言：

「久見婆羅門， 逮得般涅槃，一切怖已過， 永超世恩愛。」

於是，天子聞佛所說，歡喜隨喜，稽首佛足，即沒不現。
