> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the heavenly being Kama, of exquisite beauty, came to the Buddha in the latter part of the night. He paid homage at the Buddha's feet, then withdrew to sit to one side. The radiance of his body illuminated the entire Jeta Grove, the garden of Anathapindika.

> Then the celestial youth Kama addressed the Buddha in verse, asking:

> Greed and anger—what is their source? Why does unease make the hair stand on end? From where do terror and dread arise? And from what do thoughts and perceptions spring? Just as a young child clings to its nurse, So do these states depend on their causes.

> At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses in reply:

> Love breeds a self that grows, Like the banyan tree's spreading boughs; Wherever it clings, it takes root, Like thickets tangled in the wild. Who understands its cause, And wakes to see the truth, Crosses the sea of birth and death— No more will they be reborn.

> Then, the young god Kama, having heard what the Buddha said, was delighted and rejoiced. He bowed at the Buddha's feet and vanished from sight.
