> Chapter on Prediction of Enlightenment

> Chapter 1: The Assurance of Future Buddhahood

> Thus I have heard:

> Thus I have heard: Once, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Grdhrakuta in Rajagriha, accompanied by a great assembly of twelve hundred fifty monks. All were arhats, well-known to the community. They had exhausted all cravings, were free from afflictions, and had attained liberation of mind and wisdom, unhindered and sovereign like great dragons. They had completed their work, laid down their burdens, achieved their own true benefit, and destroyed all ties to existence. Through the true teachings, they had crossed over to the other shore. Only the venerable Ananda remained at the stage of learning. At that time, the venerable Shariputra rose from his seat. He bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms toward the Buddha, and said: "World-Honored One, how did the great bodhisattvas of the past set out on the path to supreme enlightenment? How did they cultivate a practice of thorough purity, don the armor of diligence, and adorn themselves with merit and virtue? Through donning this armor, these bodhisattvas became irreversible from supreme enlightenment. World-Honored One, please, in your great compassion, unfold and expound for us these practices, vows, and aspirations—the very arising of the bodhi-mind. "World-Honored One, these great bodhisattvas, out of their wish to benefit and bring peace and happiness to human and heavenly beings throughout the world, diligently cultivated a practice of thorough purity and donned the armor of diligence. Through this, they benefitted and brought peace and happiness to all beings. Moreover, they acted as a light of the Dharma for present and future bodhisattvas. They praised the merits and virtues they had attained, and fully realized their wholesome roots, so that other bodhisattvas, upon hearing this Dharma, might diligently study and cultivate the true nature of ultimate reality, and thereby attain supreme enlightenment."

> The Buddha said, "Excellent, excellent, Shariputra! You are able to ask about the pure practices, radiant light, and vast armor of bodhisattva-mahasattvas of the past and future, and to proclaim their merits—all for the sake of inspiring future bodhisattva-mahasattvas. Listen carefully, listen carefully, and reflect wisely. I will now explain it to you."

> Shariputra replied, "Yes, World-Honored One. We are eager to hear your teaching."

> The Buddha told Shariputra, "To the east, beyond a thousand worlds, there is a buddha-field called Joyful. Long ago, the Tathagata Vistirna-netra, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared there and taught the profound Dharma to the great bodhisattvas, beginning with the six perfections." "Shariputra, at that time there was a monk who rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms toward the Buddha, and said: 'World-Honored One, as the Buddha has taught the Dharma of the bodhisattva path, I wish to practice it.'" "The Buddha replied: 'Good man, you should know that the bodhisattva path is difficult to cultivate. Why? Because a bodhisattva never generates anger or harmful thoughts toward any living being.'" "Then that monk said: 'World-Honored One, from this day forward, I set my mind on supreme perfect enlightenment. With sincerity, I speak no lies and no false promises. I seek all-knowing wisdom, and until I attain the highest enlightenment, if I ever generate anger or harmful thoughts toward any living being, I would be betraying the countless Buddhas who teach the Dharma in measureless worlds at this very moment.'" "'World-Honored One, I now dedicate my mind to this all-knowing wisdom. If during this journey I should ever generate a thought of becoming a disciple or a solitary awakened being, I would be deceiving all Buddhas.'" "'World-Honored One, I now set my mind on this all-knowing wisdom and dedicate it in this way. Until I attain the highest enlightenment, if I should ever generate thoughts of desire, anger, or ignorance toward any living being, or fall into drowsiness, arrogance, or regret, I would be deceiving all Buddhas.'" "'World-Honored One, I now set my mind on this all-knowing wisdom and firmly dedicate it. Until I attain the highest enlightenment, if I should fall into doubt, or if I should generate thoughts of killing, stealing, wrong views, misconduct, false speech, harsh speech, or divisive speech, or if I should cause harm in any way, I would be deceiving all Buddhas.'" "Shariputra, then another monk thought: 'This great bodhisattva has taken up the armor of perseverance with his initial aspiration. He cannot be shaken by anger or any similar defilements toward any living being.'" "Shariputra, because of this thought, that bodhisattva came to be called 'Immovable' in the Joyful land. Then the Tathagata Vistirna-netra, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, saw that this bodhisattva had gained the name 'Immovable' and rejoiced, praising him. The Four Heavenly Kings, the Lord of the Brahma Heaven, and the Lord of the Heaven of the Thirty-three, upon hearing his name, also rejoiced."

> "Shariputra, that Great Being, the Unwavering Bodhisattva, made this vow before that Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I now awaken to this mind of Omniscience. I dedicate it thus to Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. Until I realize Unsurpassed True Awakening, if any practice I undertake goes against this vow, I would be deceiving the countless Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, who dwell and teach in measureless worlds. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this great resolve and dedicate it thus. Until I attain Enlightenment, if any single word I speak does not align with mindfulness of the Buddha and the quest for Omniscience, I would be deceiving all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now resolve and dedicate myself thus. Until I attain Unsurpassed True Awakening, if, in lifetime after lifetime, I remain a householder and do not leave home (to become a renunciant), I would be betraying all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this mind of Omniscience. Until I attain Supreme Awakening, if, in life after life, I take up the monastic life but do not beg for my food, do not eat only one meal, do not eat in moderation, do not refuse a second meal, do not wear the triple robe, do not wear rag robes, do not sit wherever I happen to be, do not practice constant sitting, do not dwell in a quiet forest, do not rest at the foot of a tree, do not sleep in the open, and do not stay in charnel grounds, then I would be deceiving all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this mind of Great Bodhi and dedicate it thus. Until I attain the Wisdom of All-Wise, if I fail to develop unhindered eloquence in teaching the sublime Dharma, I would be deceiving countless Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now resolve thus. Until I attain Unsurpassed True Awakening, if I do not maintain the three postures—either standing, sitting, or walking in meditation—I would be deceiving measureless Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now make this resolution. Until I attain Universal Wisdom, if I commit a root offense against any being, tell a lie, speak trivial worldly chatter, or harbor a mind intent on refuting others' doctrines, I would be deceiving countless Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this mind of Omniscience, firmly grounded and dedicated to Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. If, when teaching a woman, I fail to see the nature of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and no-self, but instead focus on her appearance or smile, revealing my teeth, I would be deceiving all Buddhas. World-Honored One, if, while rooted in this dedication to Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, I point, glance, or become restless when teaching, or if I see another Bodhisattva and do not regard them as my teacher, I would be deceiving countless Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this mind of Omniscience. Until I reach Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, if I sit and listen to teachings from, or pay homage to, non-Buddhist ascetics or brahmins—except for the disciples of the Buddhas—I would be deceiving all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to this great resolve until Unsurpassed Awakening. If, when making offerings of material things or the Dharma, I discriminate between recipients, favoring some and dismissing others, I would be deceiving all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I now give rise to the mind that seeks Universal Wisdom. Until Supreme Enlightenment, if I see a criminal about to be punished and do not sacrifice my own body and life to rescue them, I would be deceiving all Buddhas.' Shariputra, from that time on, until he attained Supreme Enlightenment, that Bodhisattva diligently practiced this great conduct. Not a single being who was about to be punished went without his protection and rescue."

> "Shariputra, at that time there was a monk who thought: 'The Tathāgata will bear witness to the practice of such a one, and the devas, humans, and asuras will also see and bear witness.' Shariputra, then the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, known as Vistīrṇ\[?\], knowing that monk’s thoughts, said: 'So it is, so it is. That which the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One sees and bears witness to—the worlds of devas, humans, and asuras also see and bear witness. Monk, if there is a bodhisattva-mahāsattva who puts on such great armor of diligence, heading toward supreme perfect enlightenment, they shall all attain unexcelled complete awakening.'"

> "Shariputra, at that time the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Imperturbable said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I now set forth this mind of omniscience. Until I realize supreme perfect enlightenment, if I should reveal the transgressions of any monk, nun, layman, or laywoman who has committed faults, then I would be going against all the Buddhas and Tathagatas. World-Honored One, I cultivate this practice, aspiring to attain supreme perfect enlightenment, so that my buddha-land may be vast and pure, and all the hearers (Śrāvakas) there may be without any faults. World-Honored One, if after setting forth this mind of omniscience, before realizing supreme enlightenment, I should even in a dream have a lustful thought resulting in emission, then I would be going against all the Buddhas and Tathagatas. World-Honored One, by cultivating this practice and realizing supreme awakening, may the renunciant bodhisattvas in that land also be without any emission even in their dreams. World-Honored One, if after setting forth this mind of omniscience, until realizing supreme perfect enlightenment, there should be any woman in my buddha-land who has the defects of womankind as in other lands, may I never attain perfect enlightenment. If I were to attain perfect enlightenment under these conditions, I would be deceiving all the Buddhas.' Shariputra, for those bodhisattvas who have fulfilled such great vow-seeds, whatever teachings arise in their minds accordingly, they are able to proclaim various instructions to sentient beings."

> Shariputra, at that time a certain monk said to Bodhisattva Akshobhya, "Great Being, if your sincere resolve is true and unwavering, and your words are not false, may you please cause the great earth to tremble with your toes." Then, by the power of the Buddha and the strength of the roots of goodness from his original vows, Bodhisattva Akshobhya made the great earth quake in six ways: it moved, moved greatly, moved universally; it trembled, trembled greatly, trembled universally. Shariputra, Bodhisattva Akshobhya, the great being, has now fulfilled what he once vowed. Therefore, if any bodhisattva-mahasattva wishes to realize supreme perfect enlightenment, they should learn from Bodhisattva Akshobhya. If there is a bodhisattva who diligently cultivates this practice, they will attain a buddha-land like his, and quickly realize supreme perfect enlightenment.

> Then Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! When the Immovable Bodhisattva first set out on the path, how many heavenly beings gathered to witness it?"

> The Buddha said to Shariputra: "At that time, all the Four Great Kings of the great trichiliocosm, along with Indra, Mara, and Brahma, the Lord of the Saha World, joyfully joined their palms and said: 'What we have now heard about this armor of merit is something we have never heard before. World-Honored One! When the Immovable Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, in his Pure Land, no being will achieve their realization through inferior roots of virtue.'"

> Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! As you have said, the armor of virtue of the Unmoving Bodhisattva is something that no other bodhisattva has ever possessed."

> The Buddha said to Shariputra, "Exactly so, exactly so. Among all the bodhisattvas who take up the great armor and set out for supreme enlightenment, none can match the Bodhisattva Immovable. Shariputra, the meritorious qualities that the Bodhisattva Immovable has perfectly realized are possessed by none of the bodhisattvas in this virtuous eon." Shariputra, at that time, the Tathāgata Broad-Vision conferred upon the Bodhisattva Immovable the prophecy of attaining Anuttarā Samyaksaṃbodhi: 'Noble son, in a future time you shall become a buddha, named the Tathāgata Immovable, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, One Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed Guide, the Tamer of Beings, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One.' This was just as the Dīpaṃkara Buddha prophesied for me. Shariputra, at the moment the Bodhisattva Immovable received this prophecy, a great radiance illumined the entire world, and the great earth shook in six ways. This was exactly as it had been when I realized all-knowing wisdom in the past—the great chiliocosm quaked in six kinds of movement.

> "Moreover, Shariputra, at that time all the trees and forests throughout the vast universe bowed towards the Bodhisattva, just as all plants and trees inclined towards me when I attained enlightenment."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received the prophecy of Buddhahood, all the devas, dragons, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas in that great universe joined their palms and bowed to him. Just as now, when I realized supreme enlightenment in this Saha world, all the devas, dragons, and other beings here join their palms and bow to me."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the great being Immovable (Akshobhya) received his prophecy of Buddhahood, all pregnant women in that world gave birth peacefully and without any difficulties. The blind could see, and the deaf could hear. This was exactly the same as when I myself attained Buddhahood.

> “Moreover, Shariputra, when the great being Akshobhya Bodhisattva set out for supreme perfect enlightenment and when the Tathagata Vipashyin, the worthy and perfectly enlightened one, conferred the prophecy of enlightenment, at those two times, no living beings died unnaturally. This was just the same as when I attained omniscience, without any difference.

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Imperturbable Bodhisattva received his prophecy of enlightenment, a delightful fragrance spread throughout the entire world. This was just like what happened when I myself attained great enlightenment long ago—a wondrous, pleasant scent was universally smelled, and there was no difference in the delightful fragrance."

> Then Shariputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, that noble being, the Never-Retreating Bodhisattva, has realized such vast and profound qualities."

> The Buddha said to Shariputra, "The Immovable Bodhisattva not only received this prediction of enlightenment from the Buddha but also has the ability to reach the far shore of boundless virtues."

> “Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received the prophecy of Buddhahood from the Tathagata Vast-Eyes, the heavens, humans, and asuras all rejoiced with calm and virtuous hearts. This was just like when I attained unsurpassed enlightenment—the same joy filled all gods and humans alike.

> Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received his prophecy of future Buddhahood, a great yaksha wielding a vajra attended and guarded him, just as it does for me now.

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received the Buddha's prophecy of his future enlightenment, gods and humans scattered various precious flowers, perfumed powders, and fragrant ointments over him—just as they did when I myself attained supreme enlightenment."

> “Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Imperturbable Bodhisattva received the prophecy of his future Buddhahood, there were various heavenly beings, each twenty billion in number, who generated the mind of supreme, perfect enlightenment. They also received from the Tathāgata Vast-Eyes the prophecy that they would attain Buddhahood.”

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received the Buddha's prophecy, the ground was covered everywhere with blue lotuses, red lotuses, and white lotuses—just as the flowers that blanket my own enlightenment site."

> "Moreover, Shariputra, when the Immovable Bodhisattva received the prophecy of his future Buddhahood, countless devas in the sky rained down heavenly garments to cover the bodhisattva, all saying: 'May this bodhisattva quickly attain supreme perfect enlightenment.' It was just as when I myself attained all-knowing wisdom—the devas scattered garments upon me, no different from this."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the gods, humans, and asuras in that world saw the immovable Bodhisattva receive the prophecy of his supreme enlightenment, they were filled with greater joy than parents in this world feel at the birth of a child. Just as when I myself attained omniscience, all gods and humans rejoiced greatly."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, through the Buddha's spiritual power, all the gods and humans in that great trichiliocosm heard the prophecy of the Bodhisattva Akṣobhya's future enlightenment. One by one, they offered him various fine robes, renowned garments, rare treasures, and delicious foods. It was like when a monk reaches the full moon of the Kārtika month, and everyone makes offerings to him. Shariputra, at the time of Akṣobhya's prophecy, beings in the realm of desire presented him with all kinds of fine flavors and played heavenly music as their offerings. Shariputra, after receiving the prophecy, the noble Bodhisattva Akṣobhya achieved such meritorious qualities and accomplishments."

> At that time, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! The Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is truly rare and remarkable. You skillfully teach that the realm of all Buddhas is inconceivable. Likewise, the states of meditative concentration, the realms of dragons, and the workings of karma and their results are all inconceivable. World-Honored One! This Bodhisattva Akṣobhya, even from his first aspiration for enlightenment, has already taken on such extraordinary qualities and received the prediction of Buddhahood from the Tathagata. He has also accomplished these kinds of inconceivable, great virtues."

> The Buddha told Shariputra, "Yes, that is exactly so. Just as you have spoken."

> At that time, the venerable Ananda said to Shariputra, "Venerable One! Even the brief portion of merits spoken by the World-Honored One regarding the Bodhisattva who has roused the initial resolve and donned the armor of diligence is still incomplete in its full description."

> Shariputra said, "That is exactly so, exactly as the Tathāgata has briefly explained. Why? Because those bodhisattvas who first set their minds on enlightenment and don the armor of perseverance accomplish immeasurable and inconceivable virtues."

> At that time, Shariputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, you have just briefly praised the extraordinary armor of diligent effort and supreme virtues of the Immovable Bodhisattva. Now, I ask that you, in order to benefit and guide all bodhisattvas of the present and future, please explain this teaching in full."

> The Buddha said to Shariputra, "The Immovable Bodhisattva, from the very first moment of generating his vow, put on the armor of diligent effort. Such virtues and merits are truly inconceivable. I will now explain a small portion of them to you. Listen closely, listen closely, and reflect upon it well."

> Shariputra replied, "Yes, World-Honored One. We are eager to hear your teaching."

> The Buddha said: "The Immovable Bodhisattva made this vow: 'Even if the sky itself could change, my great vow would never waver or retreat.' Because of this vow, all the merits and virtues of the Immovable Bodhisattva were quickly realized. Shariputra, among all the Bodhisattvas of the present virtuous kalpa, I see no one who dons the armor of diligence like the Immovable Bodhisattva does. Shariputra, the practices cultivated by the Jewel Canopy Bodhisattva, when compared to the Immovable Bodhisattva, do not amount to even a fraction — not even a hundred thousandth part. Shariputra, the armor of diligence worn by the Immovable Bodhisattva cannot be matched by countless thousands of Bodhisattvas. Shariputra, through this firm and unshakable vow, the great being Immovable Bodhisattva realized supreme perfect enlightenment. He now dwells in the Joyful Land, where he is called the Immovable Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One."

> "Moreover, Shariputra, when the Immovable Tathagata was practicing the Bodhisattva path in his past lives, if anyone came to beg for his head, eyes, brain, marrow, hands, feet, or any limbs, he granted every request without hesitation. Shariputra, from the moment he first set his mind on enlightenment until he attained supreme Buddhahood, because of this, he was free from ailments like wind, bile, phlegm, headaches, and other combined diseases. Shariputra, the Immovable Tathagata, while walking the Bodhisattva path in the past, attained such unprecedented qualities. Furthermore, because he constantly served and made offerings to the Buddhas in every life, and always practiced the pure holy life under those Buddhas, due to this, in every life he was reborn, he retained the same name — 'Immovable.' He would move from one Buddha realm to another, always being born in a world with a Buddha, and seeing the Tathagata often. Shariputra, it is like a anointed king of the warrior caste who enjoys supreme freedom in the world, moving from one palace to another without his feet ever touching the ground, indulging in the pleasures of the five senses. In the same way, the Bodhisattva Immovable, while practicing the Bodhisattva path in past lives, always cultivated the pure holy life and made offerings to the Buddhas. Whatever teachings the Buddhas expounded — instructing, benefiting, and delighting — were all in accord with the perfections, rarely with the path of the Hearers, and were capable of inspiring Bodhisattvas to enter and abide in supreme, perfect enlightenment. Because he set his mind on supreme enlightenment, he obtained this vast merit and benefit. Moreover, he dedicated the roots of goodness from teaching the Dharma toward enlightenment, making this vow: 'When I become a Buddha, may all Bodhisattvas in my realm, empowered by the Buddha's might, hear my teachings, receive, uphold, recite, and study them, and also be able to serve the Buddhas, moving from one Buddha realm to another. May they, until they attain supreme enlightenment, never be apart from the World-Honored Ones — just as I am now. Except when they reach the state of a Successor Buddha in the Tushita Heaven. Why? Because it is the natural law for great Bodhisattvas that when they descend from the Tushita heavenly host into a mother’s womb, and are born from the right side, the great earth trembles.' Shariputra, this is the auspicious sign of a great Bodhisattva in his final life. Shariputra, just as a monk possessing all supernormal powers can enter a palace as if in space, and perform all his dignified postures without any hindrance, so too does the Bodhisattva in his final life. Although in the mother’s womb, he dwells as if in space. No fetal impurities or filth can defile him, nor does he even smell any foul odors. Shariputra, the Immovable Tathagata, while practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past, made this vow: 'If I attain supreme enlightenment, may those in my Buddha realm who follow the Bodhisattva Vehicle and the Hearer Vehicle all have their demonic deeds cut off. May all types of beings, at all times, never give the hosts of Mara an opportunity. In the same way that I cut off all demonic deeds while practicing the Bodhisattva path, so may those Bodhisattvas, even before they have perfected their great virtues, always be diligently supported in their cultivation of the Bodhisattva path.' Shariputra, when the Immovable Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, was practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past, while he taught the Dharma and listened to it, his body and mind did not grow weary. Why? Because when he first set his mind on practicing the Bodhisattva path, he had already gained the power of the Dharma body. Shariputra, when the Immovable Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, was practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past, he made this vow: 'May all great Bodhisattvas in my Buddha realm attain the complete Dharma body, just as I have.'"
