> At that time, Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! You have already described the virtues that the Immovable Tathagata accumulated while practicing the Bodhisattva path. Now, I ask you to further explain in detail the splendid qualities and majestic adornments of the Immovable Tathagata's present pure land. Why? So that all beings who follow the Bodhisattva Vehicle, upon hearing of those virtues, may develop a joyful heart and wish to see that Buddha, to pay homage and make offerings. And so that those beings who dwell in the realm of the Hearers and have attained the state of no further learning, upon hearing of the magnificent adornments of that pure land, may also long to behold and honor it, paying their respects and offering service."

> The Buddha said to Shariputra: "When the Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Akṣobhya attained all-knowing wisdom, a great light shone forth, illuminating the entire universe of three thousand great worlds. At that moment, the great earth quaked in six different ways. All beings in that world, upon learning that Akṣobhya had realized unsurpassed enlightenment, experienced for seven full days no thoughts of eating, no feelings of hunger or thirst, and no weariness or desire to sleep or rest. They only felt peace, joy, delight, and a love for goodness. Moreover, during that time, all beings in that world—including those in the Realm of Desire—were completely free from sexual desire. Why was this? It was due to the power of Akṣobhya's original vow that these beings were able, in their present lives, to receive these merits. Shariputra! When the Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Akṣobhya attained all-knowing wisdom, all beings in that world sincerely pressed their palms together and faced Akṣobhya. Out of their deep longing for him, they were able to receive such immeasurable merit in their present lives."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, the merits and adornments of that Buddha's land are so magnificent that no other Buddha realm can compare with it. Shariputra, this is because that Tathagata, when practicing the Bodhisattva path, made such a vast and profound vow: that this Buddha-land would be exceptionally splendid, just as my own original vows have been fulfilled here. Shariputra, at the very moment when the Immovable Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, attained supreme awakening—whether in an instant or a mere moment—all beings throughout the three thousand worlds, whether they possessed celestial vision or not, were able to see the Immovable Tathagata. Shariputra, this too is the fulfillment of the Tathagata's original vow, enabling all sentient beings to attain such blessings."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, when the Tathagata Akshobhya sat at the seat of enlightenment to attain supreme awakening, the demon Mara did not even conceive the thought of creating obstacles. Moreover, countless hundreds of thousands of heavenly beings offered fragrant flowers and celestial music to the Tathagata, each scattering fine sandalwood powder over the Buddha. These fragrant powders and flower garlands combined in midair to form a canopy. Shariputra, all of this is the power of Tathagata Akshobhya's original vows, now brought to fulfillment."

> "Noble Shariputra! When the Buddha attained Enlightenment, a great light pervaded the entire universe of three thousand worlds, so that the light of the sun, moon, and all heavenly bodies was no longer visible. This is also the result of the Thus-Come One's past vows having come to perfect fulfillment, now manifesting this auspicious sign."

> Shariputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, that Thus Come One Imperturbable formerly practiced the Bodhisattva Path and truly possessed great and diligent armor of resolve, enabling him to bring forth such a vast and profound vow."

> Through the power of their vows to cultivate the Bodhisattva path, they enable countless beings to plant wholesome roots in the supreme enlightenment. Furthermore, they dedicate these roots of goodness toward the perfect, unexcelled enlightenment and the pure Buddha land. In this way, their vows of dedication are all completely fulfilled.

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, in that Buddha-land there is a Bodhi tree, made of seven precious jewels. It is one yojana tall, with a trunk half a krosa in circumference. Its branches and leaves provide shade covering an area of one yojana. Beneath it is a base platform four krosas around. The Buddha sits on this platform to attain enlightenment. Around this Bodhi tree are rows of palm trees and sumana trees in orderly formation. When a gentle breeze stirs them, they produce harmonious sounds that surpass any music heard in this world."

> "Furthermore, Shariputra, in the Buddha's land there are no three lower realms of suffering. What are the three? They are the hells, the animal realm, and the realm of Yama, the king of death. All beings there have perfected the ten wholesome actions. The ground is as level as the palm of a hand and is golden in color, without any gullies, ravines, thorns, or gravel. The earth is soft, like the finest cotton wool. When a foot steps on it, the ground sinks slightly, and when the foot is lifted, it returns to its original state. Shariputra, in that Buddha's land there are no three types of illness. What are the three? They are diseases caused by wind, bile, and phlegm. Shariputra, in that Buddha's land, all beings do not speak falsely, they are not ugly, their bodies have no foul odor, greed, anger, and ignorance are extremely weak, and there are no prisoners locked in jails. Shariputra, in that Buddha's land, there are no groups of non-Buddhist or heretical teachers. The trees there always bear flowers and fruit. There is a special tree called the "Kalpa tree," from which grow fine clothes of five colors. These clothes are bright, fresh, and have an extraordinary fragrance. They never change or fade in any season. They are like various types of heavenly flowers with diverse and abundant fragrances. The scent of those clothes is just like that. Those who wear these clothes emit a fragrance from their bodies that is no different from the clothes themselves. For example, it is like wealthy people in this world who naturally have an abundance of fine clothes and can use them as they wish. Shariputra, whatever food and drink the beings in that land need appear as soon as they think of them, just like in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. There is no filth or impurity from excrement or urine. Shariputra, the palaces, pavilions, and towers in that land are all adorned with the seven precious treasures. By their four sides there are many pools and lakes of water with the eight excellent qualities; they can be enjoyed according to one's wishes. There are also many parks and gardens, all pure and clean. The beings there mostly dwell in the joy of the Dharma. Shariputra, the people in that land have no jealousy. All women there surpass the most precious of human women, having acquired heavenly merits that cannot be compared to anything here. Even if one tried to compare, one hundred parts, one thousand parts, one hundred thousand parts, or even one hundred thousand million multitudes of parts, or any other number-based simile, could not equal even a fraction of it. Shariputra, the beings in that land, according to their karmic rewards, obtain various beds and seats, all made of the seven treasures, beautifully adorned and complete. When they lie down to rest, they use pillows of the finest cotton wool. All of this is due to the past vows of the Immovable Tathāgata, through which such various kinds of magnificent things are achieved. Shariputra, the color, smell, and taste of the food and drink consumed by the people in that land are not different from those of the gods. For example, just as the people of the Northern Continent of Uttarakuru have no separate king, the Land of Wonderful Joy is also like that, with only the Immovable Tathāgata as its Dharma King. Also, just as the beings of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three serve Indra, so do the people there all serve the Tathāgata. Shariputra, you should know the merits and adornments of the land of the Immovable Buddha. Shariputra, the minds of the beings in that land are free from indolence and carelessness. Why is that? It is also because of the power of the original vows of the Immovable Tathāgata."

> A monk, upon hearing the Buddha praise the merits of the realm of the Immovable Tathāgata, became attached with greed and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I now wish to be reborn in the realm of the Immovable Buddha."

> The Buddha told the monks, "How could someone as deluded and confused as you be reborn there? Why? Because it is not through a mind attached to desire that one attains rebirth there. Only by planting roots of goodness and cultivating pure practices can one be reborn there."

> "Moreover, Shariputra, in that land, beings are able to see a pure pool instantly, just as they wish for it. The water is filled with the eight excellent qualities, and whether they drink from it, rinse their mouths, or bathe in it, it always feels perfectly pleasant. But if they do not wish to see such a pool, it will not appear. Shariputra, in the realm of that Buddha, fragrant breezes gently blow and delight the minds of all. These scented winds provide all kinds of fragrant experiences for the gods and humans, subtly adapting to their preferences—sometimes reaching them, sometimes not. Shariputra, all of this is due to the power of the Tathagata Akshobhya's (Immovable One's) Fundamental Vows, forming a sublime and majestic expression of merit."

> Shariputra then said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One, when the Tathagata Akshobhya enters a chamber, do his golden lotus flowers support his feet as he walks?”

> The Buddha said to Shariputra, "This matter is quite straightforward—why ask about it so earnestly? When that Buddha enters a village or home, the thousand-petalled lotus flower appears right along with him. If a virtuous man or woman then thinks, 'If the Buddha kindly steps into this room, may all the lotuses beneath his feet gather together in one place,' the flowers will come together exactly as wished. If someone wishes the flowers to stay suspended in the air, they will remain floating in the air just as that person thought—all through the majestic power of the Buddha. Shariputra, the lotus flower beneath the Buddha's feet becomes a sacred monument for the people to revere and worship. Shariputra, in order to teach the Dharma, that Buddha travels throughout the three thousand great thousand worlds. Wherever he goes, the lotus flower appears. Moreover, wherever the Buddha manifests himself, even in other realms, the golden thousand-petalled lotus flower appears there as well. Through the Buddha's power, the entire three thousand great thousand worlds is beautifully adorned with golden thousand-petalled lotus flowers."
