The Sutra on the Eightfold Noble Path Spoken by the Buddha, translated by the Eastern Han dynasty translator An Shigao, is one of the early Buddhist scriptures transmitted to China. An Shigao, a prince of the Parthian Empire, renounced worldly life and journeyed eastward to propagate the Dharma in the Han territories, becoming a pioneer in the Chinese translation of Buddhist sutras. This sutra expounds the eight correct practices proposed by the Buddha: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration, which constitute the core framework of Buddhist practice. As an important scripture of early Buddhism, it systematically guides followers to transcend suffering and progress toward Nirvana, laying the foundational ideas for Mahayana Buddhism. This scripture not only reflects the early transmission of Buddhism during the Eastern Han period but also provides fundamental principles for ethical practice in Chinese Buddhism, holding a pioneering position in the history of Chinese Buddhism.

Sutra on the Eightfold Path

後漢安息國三藏安世高譯

Translation by An Shigao, Tripitaka Master from Parthia, Later Han Dynasty

聞如是:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。佛告諸弟子:「聽我說邪道亦說正道。何等為邪道?不諦見、不諦念、不諦語、不諦治、不諦求、不諦行、不諦意、不諦定。是為道八邪行。

Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor, near the city of Shravasti. The Buddha said to his disciples: "Listen, I will speak about the wrong path and also the right path. What is the wrong path? Wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong concentration. These are the eight wrong practices."

「何等為道八正行?一者諦見。諦見為何等?信布施、信禮、信祠、信善惡行自然福、信父母、信天下道人、信求道、信諦行、信諦受。今世後世,自黠得證自成。便相告說是為諦見。

"What is the Eightfold Path? First, Right View. What is Right View? It is to believe in giving, to believe in reverence, to believe in offerings. To believe that good and bad actions naturally bring their own rewards. To believe in parents, to believe in spiritual practitioners in the world, To believe in seeking the truth, to believe in practicing rightly, to believe in receiving rightly. In this life and the next, through wisdom one attains realization and proves it for oneself. Teaching this to others—this is called Right View."

「第二諦念為何等?所意棄欲、棄家、不瞋恚怒、不相侵,是為諦念。

What is the second truth, right intention? It means letting go of desire, renouncing the household life, not harboring anger or resentment, and not harming others. This is called right intention.

「第三諦語為何等?不兩舌、不傳語、不惡罵、不妄語,是為諦語。

What is the third truthful speech? It is avoiding divisive speech, avoiding tale-bearing, avoiding harsh words, and avoiding lies—this is truthful speech.

「第四諦行為何等?不殺盜婬,是為諦行。

The fourth noble truth: what is the path of conduct? To refrain from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct—this is the path of conduct.

「第五諦受為何等?是聞有道弟子法求,不可非法,飯食、床臥、病瘦正法求,不可非法,是為諦受。

"Fifth, what is the right livelihood? This refers to a disciple of the Buddha who seeks the Dharma and does not seek it through improper means. For food, clothing, shelter, and medicine in times of illness, one should seek them through proper means, not through improper means. This is called right livelihood.

「第六諦治為何等?生死意共合行,所精進行,出力因緣行,乃精進不厭意持,是為諦治。

What is the sixth truth practice? It is when thoughts of birth and death unite with action, and one puts forth diligent effort, exerting strength and relying on causes and conditions to act. Through such vigor, one maintains an unwavering mind without weariness. This is the truth practice.
