> The Tenth Patriarch, Venerable Parśva, was a man of Central India. His original name was Hard to Be Born. Later, after encountering the Ninth Patriarch, he attended to him constantly, never sleeping, keeping his ribs always off the mat—hence his name, Venerable Parśva. When he first arrived in the land of Pāṭaliputra, he rested under a tree, touched the ground with his right hand, and told the assembly: “When this ground turns golden, a sage will join this gathering.” As soon as he spoke, the ground turned golden. At that time, a wealthy elder’s son named Puṇyayaśas stood before him with palms joined. The Patriarch asked, “Where do you come from?” Puṇyayaśas answered, “My mind does not come from anywhere.” The Patriarch asked, “Where do you dwell?” Puṇyayaśas answered, “My mind does not abide anywhere.” The Patriarch asked, “Then are you not unstable?” Puṇyayaśas answered, “The Buddhas are likewise.” The Patriarch said, “But you are not the Buddhas.” Puṇyayaśas answered, “The Buddhas are also not the Buddhas.” <note>Great Fool Zhi said: “The Patriarch’s first question and the boy’s answer—neither truly grasped it. How do you all understand it now?” Jingshan Gao said: “Even if you understand it right now, you’ll still need to investigate through three more lifetimes and sixty kalpas.”</note> The Patriarch then spoke a verse, ordained him as a monk, and gave him full precepts. He later told him: “The great treasury of the Thus-Come One’s Dharma is now entrusted to you. Guard it well.” He then spoke this verse: The true essence is naturally true. Because it’s true, the truth can be explained. One who grasps this true truth itself— Has no movement and no stillness.
