> Twentieth Patriarch, Venerable Shiyata

> With profound wisdom, the Venerable Kumārata arrived in Central India. He asked the Venerable Roṭa, “My parents have always believed in the Triple Gem, yet they are constantly plagued by illness. Everything we do does not go as planned. Meanwhile, my neighbor has long practiced the profession of an outcast, yet his body is always strong and healthy, and everything he does succeeds. Why is he fortunate and I so unfortunate?” Roṭa replied, “Why are you troubled by doubt? The retribution of good and evil manifests in three periods of time. Ordinary people only see the virtuous dying young and the violent living long, the rebellious succeeding and the righteous failing, and thus conclude that cause and effect do not exist and that merit and sin are illusory. They fail to realize that effects follow causes as surely as a shadow follows a form and an echo follows a sound, with not the slightest error. Even after a hundred thousand eons, they are never destroyed.” Upon hearing this, the Venerable suddenly resolved all his doubts. Roṭa said, “Though you now believe in the three types of karma, you still do not understand that karma arises from delusion; delusion depends on consciousness; consciousness depends on unawareness; unawareness depends on the mind. The mind is originally pure. It is without birth or death, without creation, without retribution, without victory or defeat. It is completely still, yet brilliantly aware. If you enter this Dharma-door, you will be equal to all Buddhas. All good and evil, conditioned and unconditioned, are like dreams and illusions.” Receiving these words and grasping the essential teaching, the Venerable awakened his innate wisdom and earnestly begged to be ordained. Roṭa asked, “Where are you from? You should inform your parents before becoming a monk.” The Venerable replied, “I am from Northern India, three thousand leagues from here. But I have a small skill, so traveling back and forth is easy.” He then performed his art, and in an instant, he and Roṭa arrived there. After meeting his parents, Roṭa gave him full ordination and transmitted the Dharma. The king of the Yuezhi Kingdom heard of the Venerable’s virtuous reputation and personally came to ask for teachings. After paying his respects, he requested an explanation. The Venerable said, “Great king, before you arrived, you were mindful of the Path; now, as you leave, remain just as you were.” The king marveled and was deeply impressed.
