### ○杭州靈隱鐵牛印禪師

> Iron Ox Yin Chan Master of Lingyin Temple, Hangzhou

上堂。舉南泉示眾云。王老師自小養一頭水牯牛。擬向溪東放。不免食他國王水草。向溪西放。亦不免食他國王水草。如今不免隨分納些些。總不見得。頌曰。不如隨分納些些。喚作平常事已差。綠草溪邊頭角露。一簑烟雨屬誰家。

> The Master ascended the hall and cited Nanquan's teaching to the assembly: "Old Master Wang has raised a water buffalo since he was young. If I release it east of the stream, it cannot avoid eating the king's grass and drinking the king's water. If I release it west of the stream, it still cannot avoid eating the king's grass and drinking the king's water. Now, I cannot help but let it graze according to its share. Yet, ultimately, nothing is truly seen or grasped." Then he recited a verse: Better to let it graze freely as it may— Calling this ordinary would already miss the mark. By the green grass, at the stream's edge, its horns and head appear— Under misty rain, in a straw cloak, whose home does it belong to?
