### ○四明天童海門師齊禪師

> Master Qí of Tiantong Hǎimén in Mingzhou

由台州瑞巖奉旨陞天童。有童行日捧香合隨師各殿堂行香及畢回方丈。佛前師白佛云。晨朝誦大方廣佛華嚴經一部。回向真如云云。盖師出方丈門時。誦世主妙嚴品起。及回方丈已誦畢。其童行對眾僧說如上事。眾皆不信。師云。汝等八十一人各執經一卷。老僧於法座上誦。眾僧依命。師誦一卷畢。其八十一人各聞自手執經誦畢。眾疑方釋。知師是華嚴大菩薩再世者也。

> From Taizhou Ruiyan Temple, the Master was ordered by imperial decree to ascend to Tiantong Monastery. There was a young attendant who daily carried an incense box, following the Master as he walked through the various halls offering incense. When they finished and returned to the abbot's quarters, the Master addressed the Buddha statue, saying: "This morning I have recited the Avatamsaka Sutra in its entirety, dedicating the merits to the True Suchness." It so happened that when the Master stepped out of the abbot's quarters, he began reciting from the Chapter on the Adornments of the World Sovereigns, and by the time he returned to the abbot's quarters, he had finished reciting it completely. The young attendant told the assembly of monks about what had happened, but none of them believed it. The Master said, "All eighty-one of you, each hold a copy of the sutra. I will recite it from the Dharma seat." The monks followed his instruction. The Master recited one copy, and each of the eighty-one monks heard their own hands reciting through the text. Only then were their doubts resolved, and they knew the Master was a great Bodhisattva of the Avatamsaka Sutra reborn in this world.
