> Teacher Hui Kong of Zhong’an Temple, Fazhi (Fashi), Quanzhou

贛州蔡氏子。春日上堂。拈拄杖卓一下曰。先打春牛頭。又卓一下曰。後打春牛尾。驚起虗空入藕絲裏。釋迦無路潛蹤。彌勒急走千里。文殊却知落處。拊掌大笑歡喜。且道歡喜箇甚麼。春風昨夜入門來。便見千花生碓觜。上堂。千家樓閣一霎秋風。祇知襟袖凉生。不覺園林落葉。於斯薦得觸處全真。其或未然。且作寒溫相見。上堂。舉金剛經云。佛告須菩提。爾所國土中所有眾生若干種心如來悉知。何以故。如來說諸心皆為非心是名為心。要會麼。春風得意馬蹄疾。一日看盡長安花。僧問先佛垂範禁足安居未審是何宗旨。曰瑠璃鉢內拓須彌。僧便喝。師便打。

> A son of the Cai family from Ganzhou. One spring day, he ascended the hall. He picked up his staff and struck once, saying, "First, strike the head of the spring ox." He struck again and said, "Then, strike the tail of the spring ox." This startled emptiness into hiding within a lotus thread. Shakyamuni found no path to conceal his traces. Maitreya hurried off a thousand miles. But Manjushri knew where it landed—he clapped his hands and laughed with joy. Tell me, what is there to rejoice about? Last night, the spring breeze entered the gate, and suddenly a thousand flowers bloomed on the pestle's tip. He ascended the hall. A thousand mansions and towers, a moment of autumn wind. One only knows the coolness on sleeves and collars, not noticing the falling leaves in the garden. If you can grasp this point, then wherever you touch, reality is complete. If not, then let us simply exchange greetings of warmth and cold. He ascended the hall. Raising the Diamond Sutra, he said: "The Buddha told Subhuti, 'All the beings in those lands—their many kinds of minds, the Tathagata knows them all. Why? Because the Tathagata says all minds are not minds; this is called mind.' Do you want to understand this? 'Spring breeze fills the horse's hoofbeats with pride—in one day, I see all the flowers of Chang'an.'" A monk asked, "The ancient Buddhas set the standard of restraining oneself and dwelling in peace during the retreat. What is the essential meaning of this?" The master said, "Inside a lapis lazuli bowl, Mount Sumeru is lifted." The monk immediately shouted. The master then struck him.
