> Zen Master Meng'an Yuancong of Jingshan, Hangzhou

福州人。晦庵會中得心要。眾推為高第弟子。上堂。舉玄沙見僧禮拜。沙云因我得禮你。師頌曰。因我得禮你。莫放屁撒屎。帶累天下人。錯認自家底。上堂。舉趙州和尚在東司上見文遠。侍者過驀召文遠。遠應諾。趙州曰東司上不可與汝說佛法。師頌曰。明明道不說。此理憑誰識。春風一陣來。滿地花狼藉。送行者求僧偈云。山前麥熟雨初晴桑。柘青連柳色新。毫髮不存風骨露。頭頭總是比丘身。

> A native of Fuzhou. He attained the essential teaching within the Huian assembly, and was regarded by all as a foremost disciple. At a formal Dharma talk, he cited the story of Master Xuansha: when a monk came to pay respects, Xuansha said, "Because of me, I pay respect to you." The master then gave a verse: Because of me, I pay respect to you— Don't let out farts or drop shit. This burdens people everywhere, Who mistakenly take it as their own. At another talk, he cited the story of Master Zhaozhou on the toilet, who saw attendant Wenyuan passing by. He abruptly called out, "Wenyuan!" The attendant responded. Zhaozhou said, "On the toilet, I cannot speak the Dharma to you." The master then gave a verse: Clearly it is said—not spoken. Who can comprehend this principle? A spring breeze blows through, And flowers scatter messily across the ground. He sent off a pilgrim seeking ordination with a verse: Before the mountain, wheat ripens, rain just cleared— Mulberry and tallow trees blend green with new willows. Not a hair remains, bones and air exposed; Every sight is the body of a monk.
