> Zen Master Daosheng of Caoyuan, Guifeng, Xinzhou

> A monk from Nanjian. He left the world and resided at Miaoguo Temple in Raozhou. Later he moved to Guifeng, and eventually stayed at Jianfu Temple in Raozhou. After a month, he passed away. Once, at a Dharma gathering, he said: "The two words 'Buddha Dharma'—everyone knows them. But aconite and arsenic, who could dare to taste them? Even if you could leap past the time before Vairocana, you'd still be running around outside, lost in delusion. I, this mountain monk, have already been dragging mud and dripping water. What will you all do?" He then gave a shout. At another gathering, he said: "Today is the fifteenth of the eighth month. The sky is half cloudy, half rainy. How many passersby outside the gate fail to see the full moon shining upon the doorway? It's amusing, yet sad—how unlike the group of ancient Buddhas in West Lake Temple, who, after the meditation session, return to the hall for tea." At another gathering, he said: "Spring breeze blows east, then west. Spring rain seems clear, yet not. Pale white and deep red, spreading like brilliant brocade. Orioles sing, swallows chirp, playing in harmony like flutes and bells. Each reveals the sublime gate of perfect penetration. Every place flows with theCorrect Dharma-Eye Treasury. If you try to grasp it with conceptual thought, you'll remain amidst a thousand mountains and ten thousand rivers. But if you directly recognize it as your true home, you'll be free to pass through seven holes and eight openings." He struck the meditation bench and descended from the seat. At another gathering, he said: "Rain and snow fall in confusion; from the eaves, water drips down. How wonderful, Guanyin! Yet from the grass, it cannot leap out. What a great loss! A turtle in water tries to bore through an iron wall." He shouted, "Halt!" At another gathering, he said: "When the moon begins to grow, it topples silver mountains and iron walls. When the moon has grown, the Earth Star rides an ox through the bustling market. When the moon is full, birds on the roof whisper softly. This is not tangled vine or exposed cloth, nor profound philosophical discussion. At just such a moment, when host and guest interweave, what is the one saying to utter? From a ten-thousand-foot cliff, a single hand extends. Amid a thicket of flowers, the udumbara flower appears." At another gathering, he said: "In the early morning of the third month, the southern mountains rise green and majestic into the clouds. No need to seek further for the meaning of the coming from the West—outside the window, listen to the call of the partridge baking its cake." He patted his knee and said, "What a great song!"
