> A man from the Chen family in Huzhou. When the venerable Miaoxi traveled south, passing through Ganchao, his grandfather Chen Yan offered hospitality without a single day's gap. His mother, née Huang, dreamed of a monk who said, "You may offer to me," and thus she became pregnant. On the day of his birth, his parents vowed never to burden him with worldly concerns. At age ten, he left home to study under the monk Shou. Nine years later, he received full ordination. He then called on Muan Yong at Gushan. During a sermon, Muan declared, "The National Teacher has returned!" The master smiled and had an insight. He also called on Mi'an at Jiangshan. In the master's room, Mi'an raised the case: "Shakyamuni and Maitreya are his servants—who is he?" The master replied, "A man without a foothold." Mi'an said, "A thousand hearsays are not worth one sight." The master threw a punch. Mi'an grabbed him and shouted sternly, "You little devil! What have you seen that makes you throw wild punches?" The master said, "I still have another punch to give." Mi'an hit him twice, saying, "I'll hit this fellow without a foothold!" The master was suddenly and thoroughly awakened. Because his mother was aging, he returned home. Governor Zhu Jiang of the Ministry of Personnel invited him to reside at Guangfa Temple in the south of the city. At a formal lecture, he said: "Rising from the Bodhi tree, arriving at Deer Park—this is not the ultimate function. Transmitting the Shaolin lineage, continuing the Caoxi stream—not yet the mark of a decisive person. To be truly without reliance and without desire, with not a single thing touching the mind, still falls into the second vision. Let go one step further. Unfurling and coiling rest with me; seizing and releasing happen at the moment. When releasing, the pillar and lantern are vividly alive. When seizing, Shakyamuni and Maitreia are but his servants." He struck the staff: "Is this releasing or seizing? One breath, without words, contains all forms; the myriad beings, where do they ever thank the impartial?" At another lecture: "The teacher of Vairocana, the master of the Dharmakaya—if you want to shake the earth and emit light, come carry firewood and haul dirt. Huh! I nearly forgot." At another lecture: "If Baizhang had not sought Mazu a second time, how could he have been deaf for three days? If Linji had not gone to Dayu, how would he have known that the old lady's mind was so earnest? Yangshan obtained the pearl that calms the sea—why then, before Dongsi, does he stand with hands folded across his chest, saying there is no principle to present and no words to speak? Hmph! Even if you poured out a whole basket \[of arguments\], I guarantee you still wouldn't have understood." At another lecture: "A starving rat bites into a gourd; a clever monkey climbs a tree upside down. To penetrate the ultimate gate of Bao'en, you must take one step lower at a time. Since it is the ultimate gate, why take one step lower? When you step on it, I'll tell you." At another lecture, referring to Dongshan's verse for the assembly: "The gate of emptiness has a path all may reach; only those who arrive know how deep the meaning goes. When the mind-ground gives rise to no wild grasses, the path naturally emits a white halo of light." The master remarked: "Dongshan only knew how to find something within nothing, but not how to find nothing within something. Yining, however, is different: The gate of emptiness has a path all may reach; only those who arrive know how obstruction becomes passage. Plant flowers on stone and they bear fruit—in the end, no spring wind is needed." As he approached the end, he gathered the assembly and instructed them: "In my life I have never kept possessions. Simply let me sleep in the common dormitory for two days—that is enough." He wrote a verse, sat upright, and passed away. Three days later, when the temple was filled with fragrance, the assembly realized the meaning of his words. He was seventy years old, with fifty-two rainy-season retreats.
