姑蘇人。上堂。舉睦州因僧問。以一重去一重即不問。不以一重去一重時如何。睦州曰。昨日栽茄子。今日種冬瓜。師頌曰。昨日栽茄子。今日種冬瓜。一聲河滿子。和月落誰家。

> A native of Gusu. Ascending the hall, he cited the story of Muzhou: A monk asked, “If one removes one layer with another layer, I won’t ask. When one does not remove one layer with another layer, what then?” Muzhou said, “Yesterday I planted eggplants; today I plant winter melons.” The master composed a verse: “Yesterday I planted eggplants; today I plant winter melons. A single tune of ‘Hemanzi’ falls with the moon—into whose home?”
