> A native of Changguo. He was small in stature but exceedingly sharp and vigorous. He became a monk under the venerable Zhigong Ju, who shaved his head. He thoroughly investigated the Caodong school's essential teachings, plumbing them to their very depths. He first appeared at Shimen in Cixi, then successively resided at Xiangshan, Zhimen, and the prefectural Tianning. Following this, he took charge of three other temples. The four assemblies of devotees, with repeated requests, prevailed upon him to reside at Tiantong. Ascending the hall, he said: "Within the bustle and red dust of the marketplace, there is the Dharma of the bustle and red dust of the marketplace. Within the deep mountains and rocky cliffs, there is the Dharma of the deep mountains and rocky cliffs. This mountain monk yesterday left the city gate—the Dharma within the bustle and red dust of the marketplace was momentarily forgotten. Walking twenty li amid the pine clouds, I then saw the Dharma within the deep mountains and rocky cliffs. Great assembly, tell me—what is the Dharma within the deep mountains and rocky cliffs?" After a long pause, he said: "White clouds drift faintly, appearing and disappearing within the vast void. Green vines cling and climb, ascending straight to the summit of the cold pines." Ascending the hall to thank the head monk, the scribe, and the librarian, he drew a circle with his whisk and said: "The Mahayana Dharma transcends the four propositions and is free of the hundred negations." He drew another circle and said: "In the practice of ritual, harmony is most precious; the way of the ancient kings is beautiful in this." He drew yet another circle and said: "The Mani pearl, which people do not recognize, is personally held within the Tathagata's treasury. Do you all see it? Perceptions differ, and gains and losses vary accordingly. Here at Tiantong, there is no rigidity, no absolutes." When the master expounded the Dharma, he excelled at apt analogies and illustrative references, always striving to meet students on their level and guide them to completion in a roundabout manner. As for his mastery soaring beyond the dust and beyond all traces—even with the eyes of a hawk or a dragon, one could find no crack to glimpse it. Throughout his life, he was neither arrogant nor acquisitive. Whatever offerings or alms he received, he gave away immediately. When he entered stillness, he left no surplus possessions, and the monks collectively contributed funds to see to his funeral rites. He was buried at his mountain temple.
