> Master Guangmu of Shaoshi Temple on Ruiyan Mountain, Taizhou

上堂。舉曹山霞因僧侍立。山曰道者可煞熱。曰是。山曰祇如熱向甚麼處回避。曰向鑊湯爐炭裏回避。山曰祇如鑊湯爐炭裏又作麼生回避。曰眾苦不能到。師頌曰。瞎却頂門三隻眼。鑊湯爐炭裏優遊。若言眾苦不能到。端的何曾有地頭。

> The Master ascended the hall and cited the story of Caoshan Xia. A monk stood in attendance. Caoshan said, "Reverend, it is truly hot." The monk replied, "Yes." Caoshan asked, "Now, where can one escape this heat?" The monk answered, "One can take refuge in a boiling cauldron or a blazing furnace." Caoshan asked, "And how does one escape the heat within the boiling cauldron or blazing furnace?" The monk replied, "The myriad sufferings cannot reach there." The Master then composed a verse: He blinds the three eyes atop the crown— Roaming freely in cauldron and furnace, unbound. If one claims the myriad sufferings cannot touch this ground, Then truly, where has the place ever been found?
