### ○奉化嶽林栯堂益禪師

> Zen Master Yutang Yi of Yuelin Temple in Fenghua

溫州人。出世婺之天寧。遷薦福。後主明之太平。升彰聖至嶽林。上堂。魯祖面壁。麻谷閉門。二大老雖與天寧相去數百年。今日各與二十拄杖。何故。譬如油蠟作燈燭。不以火點終不明。示眾。諸子出息不保入息。二六時中切莫將身心別處雜用。饒你掉臂也是祖師西來意。脚頭尖也踢出一員古佛。不如無事好。上堂。古者道我這裏無法與人。只是據欵結案。彰聖者裏亦無法與人。亦不據欵結案。拈柱杖云。如何是佛。赤脚踏蓮花。如何是佛向上事。雕梁𦘕棟。擲下拄杖便歸方丈。二月十五日上堂。擊拂子一下。彰聖今日將三十年前冷灰中𪹼出一粒烏豆。換老鬍眼睛去也。喝一喝云。設有一法過於涅槃。我此一喝不作一喝用。上堂。舉黃龍三關話拈云。黃龍老人頭匾。所以說漳泉福建話逼真。謾得天下人過。謾漳泉福建人不過。上堂。指左邊者是香爐。指右邊者是花瓶。能以一義作無量義。能以無量義為一義。陳尊宿織蒲鞋。鄧師伯打瓦鼓。上堂。一切世間諸所有物。皆即菩提妙明元心。石脾入水即乾出水即濕。獨活有風不動無風獨搖。上堂。諸上座步步是汝證明處。須是自肯方可歸家穩坐。若不然者。𧑀蛣腹蟹水母目蝦。上堂。五千四十八卷只作一句道却。遂起身云。立地待諸人搆取。便下座。臨終遺偈云。八十三年什麼巴鼻。柏樹成佛虗空落地。火葬牙齒數珠不壞。舍利瑩然。

> A native of Wenzhou. He left home at Tianning Monastery in Wu, then moved to Jianfu, and later became abbot of Taiping in Ming Prefecture. He was elevated to Zhangsheng and eventually to Yuelin. One day, at the Dharma hall, he said: "Master Lu faced the wall, and Magu closed his door. Though these two great masters lived centuries apart from Tianning, today I give each of them twenty strikes with the staff. Why? It's like an oil-wax candle—without a flame, it will never light." Addressing the assembly, he said: "All of you, when you breathe out, you can't be sure you'll breathe in again. In every moment of the day and night, don't let your mind and body wander into useless distractions. Even if you swing your arms, that's the Patriarch's intent coming from the West. If your toe kicks out, it unearths an ancient Buddha. Better to just have nothing to do." At the Dharma hall, he said: "The ancients said, 'I have no Dharma to give people—I just settle cases according to the evidence.' Here at Zhangsheng, I also have no Dharma to give people, but I don't settle cases according to the evidence either." He picked up his staff and said: "What is Buddha? Bare feet stepping on a lotus flower. What is above Buddha? Carved beams and painted rafters." He set down the staff and returned to his quarters. On the fifteenth day of the second month, at the Dharma hall, he struck the whisk once and said: "Today, Zhangsheng takes a black bean that was blown out of cold ashes thirty years ago and swaps it for the old barbarian's eyes!" He gave a shout and said: "Even if there were a single Dharma surpassing Nirvana, this shout of mine isn't used as just one shout." At the Dharma hall, he cited the story of Huanglong's Three Barriers and said: "Old man Huanglong had a flat head, so he spoke with a genuine Zhangzhou-Quanzhou-Fujian accent. He could fool everyone under heaven, but he couldn't fool the people of Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and Fujian." At the Dharma hall, he said: "The one on the left is an incense burner. The one on the right is a flower vase. One can turn a single meaning into countless meanings, and countless meanings into a single meaning. Elder Chen wove straw sandals, and Master Deng beat a clay drum." At the Dharma hall, he said: "All things in the world are inherently the wondrous, bright, original mind of Enlightenment. A stone spleen in water becomes dry; out of water, it becomes wet. Angelica stands still in the wind but sways all alone when there's no wind." At the Dharma hall, he said: "All of you, noble ones, every step you take is where you confirm your realization. You must affirm it for yourself before you can return home and sit in peace. If not, you're like the clam-crabs in the spurge—or the jellyfish that borrows the shrimp's eyes." At the Dharma hall, he said: "All five thousand forty-eight scrolls of the canon can be spoken in a single sentence." He then stood up and said: "Stand here and let each of you grasp it." With that, he left the seat. As his final verse before passing, he wrote: "Eighty-three years—what kind of foothold is this? A cypress tree attains Buddhahood; empty space falls to the ground." When cremated, his teeth and prayer beads remained unburnt, and his relics shone brightly.
