> Fude was a native of the Huang family in Changxi. He first visited Elder Mingsou Yao at Tianning in Jiahe. Although he received encouragement from him, he had not yet achieved a great awakening. Later, he studied under Yanxi at Jingci, attending to him closely. Through morning and evening consultations, he attained wisdom and realization. He then visited Qingxi Yuan at Huqiu, who appointed him as the keeper of the scriptures. He went to Shuangjing to see Cangsou, who likewise made him custodian of the canon. In the year 1280 of the Yuan dynasty, when Heshan's abbacy fell vacant, he was invited to fill the position. Subsequently, he moved to Damei in Siming. In 1300, the elders of Heshan jointly petitioned the Central Buddhist Registry to invite him back for a second term. Ascending the hall, he said: "In the autumn gloom of the wild plains, the cold crickets all sing. The maple forest sheds its leaves, each piece a crimson heart. Bodhidharma's crown has no bone—his descendants grope for a needle at the bottom of the sea. What if they suddenly find it? Who says the Dragon King's palace is deep?" Ascending the hall, he said: "Bodhidharma did not come to the Eastern Land—the official road has few travelers. The Second Patriarch did not go to the Western Heaven—many people drink the private liquor. Before Heshan's gate there is a great road, with countless coming south and going north. Only, in the middle, there is a stone that no one has yet trodden upon. Is there anyone in this assembly who can step on it?" He cast down his staff and said, "Watch your step." Ascending the hall, he said: "Today is the twenty-fifth of the eighth month. I remember Dongshan leaving Chadu, falling into Yunmen's net. Though wronged, to this day there is no place for vindication." He raised his whisk and said, "Great Master Yunmen has come! He deserves a blow from my staff. But tell me—what is his fault? He should not have toyed with people's boys and girls." Ascending the hall, he said: "With deliberate seeking, you'll meet only in the year of the donkey. Let go completely, and it appears before your eyes. Xiangyan, upon hearing the strike of bamboo, thoroughly saw his original face—that I need not ask about. But tell me, in this heat, where can one take refuge? Go back to the hall and drink some tea." In 1315, on the fifth day of the eleventh month, he called his disciples and entrusted them with his final affairs. Asking for paper, he wrote in large characters: "Free from cages, without evasion. The great sea ripples clear; empty space stands alone revealed." Setting down the brush, he passed away peacefully. He was eighty-six years old.
