### ○四明雪竇無印大證禪師

番陽史氏。幼頴異。父母知不可留。便從昌國寺智節學出世法。謁荊石琬於廬山圓通。不契。時思庵睿居閑房。師日親󱐑煉。雲外唱曹洞之道于天童。往依之入室。雲外云天童今日大死去也汝作麼生救。師云請和尚喫󰕖。外又云天童今日大死去也汝不要相救。師云救他作麼。外又云天童今日大死去也阿誰與我同行。師云和尚先行某甲後隨。外呵呵大笑。自茲情同魚水猶溈山寂子。命典藏教。至治間詔天下善書者金書藏經。竣事賜織金。屈眴南還江浙。丞相脫歡公起師主衢之南禪。繼領光孝。遷信之祥符。移明之定水。升雪竇。上堂。千說萬說不若覿面。一見昨日二十九。今朝七月一。報你參玄人。光陰如箭疾。娘生兩隻眼。箇箇黑如漆。急急急。回頭看取天真佛。良久。是何面目。下座巡堂喫茶。上堂。妙不妙。衲僧鼻孔多無竅。玄不玄。剎竿頭上無青天。至士寧容衲手。良馬豈待揮鞭。全超棒喝不落蹄筌。百鳥不來春又過。巖房贏得日高眠。退居定水圓明庵入寂。至正辛丑九月二十一日也。壽六十五。闍維牙齒數珠不壞舍利明瑩。門人景雲等塔于圓明庵之後。

> Fan Yang Shi of the Shi family. From a young age, he showed extraordinary talent. His parents, knowing he could not be kept at home, allowed him to study the path of liberation under Zhijie at Changguo Temple. He then visited Jing Shi Wan at Yuan Tong in Lushan, but did not find a connection. At that time, Si'an Rui lived in a quiet room, and the master (Fan Yang) trained with him daily. Yun Wai propagated the Caodong (Soto Zen) path at Tiantong, and the master went to join him. One day, Yun Wai said, "Today Tiantong is about to die a great death. How will you save him?" The master replied, "Please, Master, have some tea." Yun Wai again said, "Today Tiantong is about to die a great death. Won't you help him?" The master replied, "Why should I save him?" Yun Wai said a third time, "Today Tiantong is about to die a great death. Who will walk with me?" The master replied, "Master, you go ahead. I will follow behind." Yun Wai burst into laughter. From then on, their bond was like that of fish and water, much like the relationship between Guishan and his teacher. He was appointed as the keeper of the scriptures. During the Zhizhi reign, the emperor ordered all skilled calligraphers to write the Buddhist canon in gold. Upon completion, he was granted woven gold fabrics. He then returned south to Jiangzhe, where Prime Minister Tuohuan invited him to lead Nanchan in Quzhou. He subsequently led Guangxiao, moved to Xiangfu in Xin, then to Dingshui in Ming, and eventually rose to Xuedou. At the hall, he said: "In a thousand words and ten thousand sayings, it is better to see face to face. Yesterday was the twenty-ninth, today is the first of July. I tell you, seekers of the profound truth, time flies like an arrow. Everyone is born with two eyes, each as dark as lacquer. Hurry, hurry, hurry! Turn your head and see the true Buddha of your own nature." After a long pause, he said, "What is this face?" He then descended from the seat and walked through the hall for tea. At another time, he said: "Wonderful or not wonderful, the nostrils of a monk are often blocked. Profound or not profound, the flagpole has no blue sky above it. A noble person does not need a halter, a good horse does not wait for a whip. Transcending the stick and the shout entirely, not falling into traps or tracks. When the hundred birds do not come and spring has passed, one wins the luxury of lying in bed till the sun is high in the stone hut." He later retired to Yuan'an Hermitage in Dingshui, where he passed away on the twenty-first day of the ninth month in the Xinchou year of the Zhizheng era. He was sixty-five years old. After cremation, his teeth and prayer beads remained intact, and his relics were bright and radiant. His disciples, such as Jingyun, built a stupa behind Yuan'an Hermitage in his honor.
