### ○杭州徑山石溪心月禪師

> Chan Master Shixi Xinyue of Jingshan, Hangzhou

西蜀眉州人。上堂。舉僧問九峰和尚如何是學人自己。峰曰更問阿誰。僧云便恁麼承當時如何。峰曰須彌還更戴須彌。師頌曰。自家冷暖自家知。祖意西來更問誰。全體承當全體是。須彌頂上戴須彌。送僧偈曰。未到雙林見舊遊。眉橫新月眼橫秋。寒暄未舉宜先問。因甚橋流水不流。

> He was from Meizhou in Western Shu. Ascending the hall, he cited a monk asking Master Jiufeng, "What is this student's own self?" Jiufeng said, "Who else would you ask?" The monk said, "Then should I just accept it as it is?" Jiufeng said, "Does Mount Sumeru still need to be piled on top of Mount Sumeru?" The master composed a verse: "The warmth and cold of one's own—only one knows. The ancestral intent comes from the West; who else to ask? Accept it wholly, and it is wholly so—On the peak of Sumeru, another Sumeru rests." He also composed a parting verse for a monk: "Before reaching Twin Trees, you see an old acquaintance. Brows arch like the new moon, eyes glance across autumn. Before exchanging pleasantries, better ask first—Why does the bridge flow while the water stands still?"
