> Lü Tiechuan Lay Buddhist

> His mother, Lady of the State of Qin, dreamed while pregnant that the two venerable saints of Gong'an, who served as abbots of Fuyan, appeared to her; it was only after the venerable You's blessing that she gave birth. Therefore, although the layman was born into wealth and nobility, he always regarded thoroughly penetrating the ancestral barrier as his utmost priority. Before he reached the age of twenty, he devoted himself day and night to studying under Master Kongshan. One day, Kongshan asked him, "Have you ever seen Zhaozhou?" The layman replied in a stern voice, "No." Kongshan, pleased, told others, "He is a reincarnated master." The layman once served as the chief commander of the Jianghuai region. In Jiading, Suzhou, he built a Buddhist temple named Yongsheng to accommodate wandering monks. He composed sixty-nine poems in response to Zen Master Yongming Shou's mountain-dwelling verses, capturing the true essence of forest life. His other gathas and verses were all transcendent and free from worldly concerns, truly reflecting his spiritual attainment. At a Dharma-extinction memorial ceremony for Bodhidharma, he offered incense and said: "Coming from the West, he did not heed Emperor Liang's will; Going back West, he carried but a single shoe in vain. If this is called wondrous function and spiritual power, What true monk would reckon you at all? Nine years facing a wall, then he found his stage, He took in one man, who was armless—what a page! Robes and bowl passed down, entangling until Huineng, From then on, entanglements grew without end. My offenses tower to the heavens, Yet the stream of lineage holds not a single drop. Today, seven hundred eighty-six years since his passing, Which descendant feels the pain to the marrow? A burner of incense, a cup of tea— Repaying kindness is but to betray it deeply. If I wished to present this to him directly, I pity that his front teeth have long been lost."
