> Chan Master Dumulin of Qionglong in Suzhou

> I first visited Shilin at Huanglong. Shilin asked, "Whom have you studied with before?" I answered truthfully. Shilin took his sitting mat, bowed before me, and said, "You could be my teacher." Then he returned to his quarters and shut the door. I went back to the hall and sat down, unaware that my whole body was drenched in sweat. After that, whenever he saw me, he would say, "Return that bow to me." My mind burned with confusion for three years. One day in the abbot's room, Shilin brought up the story of Deshan carrying his bowl. I asked about it again. Shilin recounted the entire koan. I then bowed and withdrew. Shilin said, "Is the final word existent or nonexistent? Come back and tell me." The next day, as I heard the bell in front of the monks' hall, I suddenly understood the meaning of the secret transmission. I went straight to the abbot's quarters. As soon as Shilin saw me, he asked, "What is the final word?" On the table were a couple of melons. I picked one up and said, "This right here is the final word." Shilin said, "You took four or five days to think up that line." I responded, "Don't fool me." Shilin asked, "What exactly is the meaning of the secret transmission?" I said, "A thief recognizes a thief." Shilin asked, "Where is the thief?" I pointed and said, "Right here." Then I presented a verse: \*Not knowing the secret transmission at Yantou's time,\* \*The questions of existence and nonexistence stirred many doubts.\* \*Wind blows willow catkins, fuzzy balls rolling—\* \*Rain beats pear blossoms, butterflies flying.\* Only then did Shilin approve. Later I went to Yanneng at Yanshan to visit Master Hengchuan. As soon as he saw me, he asked, "Where have you been lately?" I said, "Master, try saying it." Hengchuan said, "I can't say it." I said, "Not being able to say it is the most intimate." Hengchuan said, "That's my line." I said, "Be careful not to discriminate." When I arrived at Bao'en Temple in Mingzhou, I happened upon Jue'an in the abbot's room. He held up a bamboo whisk and said, "Call it a whisk and you hit it directly. Don't call it a whisk and you turn your back on it." I grabbed the whisk and said, "Master, put this down and say something else." Jue'an raised his fist. I said, "You're splitting the words into two pieces." Jue'an struck me and said, "Other places might accept that, but at Bao'en you deserve this stick." I said, "When meeting others, just bring it up like this." Jue'an had a verse: \*Caltrops cover the earth, fire fills the sky.\* \*Sheer cliffs and hanging walls—no road through.\* \*Were it not for Forest Attendant Lin of Siming,\* \*Who would risk life and limb to enter there?\* I first served as abbot at Juebao in Suzhou, then at Qionglong. At the public lecture: "Thus—by the Five Dragon Pond, the ancient Buddha's family style is fully revealed. Not thus—on the Flower Platform, the monk's true face thrusts forward. Thus and not thus—the city of Helu shakes as flowers rain down. Even so, this is of no use whatsoever at the gate of Shaolin. Why? Wind settles, the sky of Yao is vast. Clouds part, the sun of Shun shines bright." At another lecture, citing Buddha Eye's instruction to the assembly: "Day by day, hour by hour, this old man at Longmen knows in his heart." I say differently: "Day by day, hour by hour, I would be a disciple of the Empty King. Do not let the heart's sickness become hardest to cure." At another lecture: "If you understand the dharma before your eyes, you will grasp the intention of the Western Ancestor. Setting aside the dharma before your eyes—what is the intention of the Western Ancestor?" Striking the whisk, I said, "The sundial shifts, the sun reaches its southernmost point." At another lecture: "The two arise from the one, but do not even hold to the one. Douba's hempen shirt is worn through. Wind blows the stone mortar running."
