> First, he called on Wuzhun at Jingshan. Then, at Lengquan, he met Xuzhou. When he began his teaching career at the ten-thousand-year-old temple in Siming, he opened the hall and, holding up incense, said: "This incense was picked up among the rubble on the peak of Lingxiao during the Chunhua era, and so I knew the ground beneath my feet. Later, by the Breast-Spring peak and before the Cold-Flower Pavilion, my skin peeled away completely, leaving only what is real. Finally, I wandered beneath Flying-Peak and before the Direct-Pointing Hall, where I ran into an old master who couldn't tell black from white or north from south. Getting a sniff from him, my breath vanished entirely, yet the fragrance filled the heavens and scorched the earth." And so on. He addressed the assembly: "If you're mindless, you miss the mark. If you use intention, you err. At the door of a good physician, how do you prescribe medicine?" He patted his knee and said: "Muzhou carried his load. Puhua rang his bell." He addressed the assembly: Citing the case where a monk asked Yunmen, "When one kills father and mother, one repents before the Buddha. When one kills the Buddha and the patriarchs, where does one repent?" Yunmen said, "Dew." The master's verse: The same spring beauty never tilts one way — white and red each blooms in its own right. Paths turn, streams curve, and the scenery is fine — atop Sumeru's five peaks, waves touch the sky. He addressed the assembly: "Shakyamuni spoke for forty-nine years, yet still couldn't say it. Bodhidharma sat in stillness for nine years, yet still couldn't see it. What can't be said, what can't be seen — the sea god knows it's precious but not its price. Leave it to the world to light up the night." He addressed the assembly: Citing an ancient worthy's words: "If your mind is without grasping, like the wind — flying sand and rolling stones don't violate emptiness. Just understand non-attachment within events — no need to be deaf when seeing forms and hearing sounds." The great assembly, when the ancient worthy spoke thus, he was already forcing the noble into servitude. Twin-Eyebrow Mountain is not like that: If your mind is without grasping, like the wind — east, west, south, north, all roads are open. Within this, sounds and forms are not sounds and forms — clouds naturally soar high, waters naturally flow east. He addressed the assembly: Citing the saying, "Three parts of time, two already passed — have you ever stirred? The single spark of the spirit, never polished — why blame it?" Greedily clinging to life, bustling day after day — this too is just an ordinary way of walking. When called, it won't turn back — what can be done? Before, there was no one enlightened; after, no one to come. Chengtian thus criticizes you all. You must not generate interpretations from the words. He struck the staff once on the ground.
