> Master Xigu Xiling of Jingshan, Hangzhou

婺州人。上堂。直指人心。曲垂方便。石鞏張弓。三平架箭。上堂。見處平常。用處平常。截鶴而短。續鳧而長。有見恁麼道。便道我會了也。西天鬍子因甚沒髭鬚。

> From Wuzhou. At the formal discourse, he pointed directly to the mind, and skillfully offered expedient means. Shigong drew his bow, Sanping set his arrow. At the formal discourse: Seeing is ordinary, functioning is ordinary. Cutting the crane's legs short, extending the duck's legs long. If someone sees it said this way and then claims, "I've understood," then why does the Westerner's beard have no whiskers?
