> At first, he resided at Yangzhou's Yongxi Temple, then moved to Guangde's Lingshan, Anji's Fengshan, Ji'an's Dongshan, Wuzhong's Huqiu, Taizhou's Huiyin, Tianning, and finally Hangzhou's Zhongtiantian. During a formal Dharma talk, he cited Master Fu's verse: "Empty-handed, yet holding a hoe; walking, yet riding a water buffalo. A man crosses the bridge; the bridge flows, but the water stands still." The master commented, "His speech is full of local dialect—one can hardly blame the Master Fu for it. Lingshan also has a verse: Barefoot across a dry stream, straw sandals trip on a tree. Falling backward with a stumble, belly smeared with yellow mud." At the close of the summer retreat, he cited an ancient master who spent the entire retreat without speaking to the community, throwing open the eastern gate. A monk sighed, "Just passing time idly. I don't expect to hear the Dharma, but if I could at least hear the two words 'right cause,' that would be enough." The ancient master said, "Monk, don't be hasty. As for those two words 'right cause,' even they don't exist." Then, clicking his teeth, he added, "I shouldn't have said that just now." A neighboring elder commented, "A fine pot of soup, spoiled by two drops of rat droppings." The master then set down his stick and said, "The ancients' vital throats have been pinched shut by Lingshan. Look around—is there anyone who can breathe for them?" With that, he stepped down from the seat. Another talk: "This land's pure rules draw circles to keep ants away; the Western ancients' customs tied up pens to pen in sheep. Today, we'll set all that aside and establish new regulations." He struck the whisk and said, "Still, the breeze in the palace halls remains cool." Another talk: He cited the World-Honored One ascending the seat with the assembly gathered. Kasyapa announced, "The World-Honored One has finished speaking the Dharma," and the Buddha descended. The master commented, "The sovereign is wise, the ministers are capable. Yet even so, do you know that peace has no visible form?" Another talk: He cited an ancient master saying, "Within heaven and earth, throughout the universe, there is a single treasure hidden in the mountain of form." Another ancient master said, "It hangs on the wall." The master commented, "What a fine treasure—needlessly locked away in a box by those two elders. Today, Fengshan will open it for you all: Within heaven and earth, throughout the universe, there is a single treasure." Then he stepped down. Another talk: "Zhaozhou poured deadly poison into the tea bowl, yet couldn't rot the abbot's guts. Lan'an bared a frosty blade behind a smiling face, but couldn't sever Shushan's lifeline. If it were someone from my hometown, I'd never dare touch them lightly. Why? Taizhou's nature is a flint that sparks at the slightest touch." Another talk: "South of the Yangtze and in Zhejiang, spring is cold and autumn hot. One rain brings coolness—don't say I never told you." Another talk: He picked up his staff, struck it once, and said, "I announce to the assembly." The assembly looked up. He then leaned the staff aside and said, "Let's wait for another time." At the opening of the furnace, he said: "Since Nanshan suffered the fire, I dare not mention the word 'fire,' nor touch dead firewood. Today, we open the furnace—let's stir the cold ashes." Striking with his staff, he said, "Be careful not to burn your eyebrows." On the fourteenth day of the fourth month in the Renchen year of the Zhiyuan era, he passed away in the abbot's quarters at Jingci Temple.
