> Master Zhongtang Zongchan of Hangzhou Zhongzhu

上堂。隔山見烟便知是火。隔墻見角便知是牛。咄哉不快漆桶。我更問你參學眼在什麼處。上堂。諸德行亦禪坐亦禪。未到曹溪時語。到了曹溪時語。若與麼。永嘉大師正好行脚。上堂。舉僧問百丈如何是奇特事。丈云獨坐大雄峰。師云。老百丈與麼道未為奇特。或有問山僧如何是奇特事。只向道。中峰今日開堂。上堂。諸兄弟南來北往京三汴四。行脚事未問。你還知諸方老宿向上提持麼。良久。路遙知馬力歲久見人心。上堂。千了百當孤峰獨宿。七間僧堂甘心閑却。中峰與麼道也是按牛頭喫草。

> The master addressed the assembly: "Seeing smoke from across the mountain, you know there is fire. Seeing horns from across the wall, you know there is an ox. But you dullards, slow to grasp this—I ask you again, where is the eye of your study and practice?" The master addressed the assembly: "All virtues, whether walking or sitting, are Chan. There is the saying before reaching Caoxi, and the saying after reaching Caoxi. If it were so, Great Master Yongjia would still need to travel and practice." The master addressed the assembly: "A monk once asked Baizhang, 'What is the extraordinary matter?' Baizhang replied, 'Sitting alone on Great Hero Peak.' The master said, 'Old Baizhang's reply was not yet extraordinary. If someone were to ask me, 'What is the extraordinary matter?' I would simply say, 'Zhongfeng holds this lecture today.'" The master addressed the assembly: "All you brothers, coming south and going north, through the capital and beyond—before you even ask about the matter of pilgrimage, do you know how the elder masters everywhere raise and uphold the ultimate? After a long silence, he said, 'The road reveals the horse's strength; time reveals the person's heart.'" The master addressed the assembly: "A thousand matters settled, one dwells alone on the solitary peak. The seven-room monk hall is willingly left idle. Zhongfeng speaking this way is still just pressing the ox's head to eat grass."
