> Master Fang of Changle, Fuzhou, was exceptionally bright from a young age, able to recite any text after a single reading. At eleven, he left home under Master Zijian at Anguo Temple in Shaowu. Wandering in search of truth, he arrived at Jiangshan, where Master Tanfang's assembly was flourishing. There he met Elder Tieshan of Min, a respected senior teacher. The master sought his guidance on meditation. Tieshan instructed him to contemplate the gong'an "A dog has no Buddha-nature." After prolonged practice, he suddenly had an awakening. He approached Tieshan and declared, "I've caught Zhao Zhou!" Tieshan asked, "And the word 'no'?" The master struck him with his fist. Tieshan pressed, "Apart from this fist, where does it land?" The master grabbed his sitting cushion, shook it, and asked, "What more do you need?" Tieshan said, "I spare you thirty blows." He then visited Master Liaoyin of Jinshan, known in the meditative path. He consulted Master Liaoyin, saying, "Traveling afar to find the wind of your virtue, please guide me with a single reception." Liaoyin said, "Before you even entered the gate, your mind has already been received." The master replied, "Catching the wind to blow the fire — no great effort needed." Liaoyin asked, "Where did the temple secretary come from recently?" The master answered, "Jinshan." Liaoyin asked, "When Jinshan and Jiaoshan face each other in dispute, what is the first opportunity?" The master replied, "If I were to speak as much to the Master, I fear only your disbelief." Liaoyin nodded. He also appointed him to oversee the records. Following an official decree, he was installed at the Jueci Temple in Taizhou, then transferred to Hongfu Temple. In the spring of the fifth year of the Hongwu Era, Emperor Taizu summoned ten eminent monks to a great Dharma assembly at Zhongshan. The Master was among those selected, and he was called to an audience beneath the Wulou Tower, where he received imperial meals. The next day, the Emperor personally visited Zhongshan and entered Chongxi Temple, where the Master gave a discourse that pleased the sovereign. The imperial countenance beamed with joy. Shortly afterward, he contracted a mild illness. He told his disciples, "I am leaving today." Someone asked, "How is the Master feeling?" He said, "You think I'm deluded?" The questioner replied, "Delusion can be clouded, but cannot cloud that which is beyond delusion." The Master thundered, "What is this 'delusion' or 'beyond delusion'?" The assembly begged him to leave a verse. He took up the brush and wrote in large characters: "Having a world to renounce is the view of sentient beings. Having no world to renounce is the view of the Tathagata. Tread down Mount Sumeru, And space has no front or back." Thus seated upright, he passed away in stillness. The eminent Master Zen of the heavenly realm entered the palace and reported the Master's passing, reciting his final verse. The Emperor inscribed it by his own hand and lamented with deep sighs for a long while. Cremation yielded countless relics. He lived to be fifty-seven years old, with forty-six in renunciation.
