### ○廬州大湖普明無用賢寬禪師

> Zen Master Xian Kuan, also known as Wuyong, of Dahu Pu Ming Temple in Luzhou

廬之和州含山縣周氏。參金牛於冶父。初入門金牛便喝。師亦喝。金牛曰那裏學得這虗頭來。師曰大有人疑著。金牛便打。次日又見金牛。引師入閤中坐。忽爐內湯瓶瀉爐灰上衝。師豁然大悟。汗流浹背。即呈偈。有水底泥牛吼一聲。大千沙界一齊傾之句。金牛頷之。至元甲午於太湖創禪居曰普明。又於西梁山及當塗各處建庵。師往來說法四方禪衲蟻慕。夜則有天燈下照。人皆驚嘆。師若無有。帝師特賜佛照圓悟之號。佛成道示眾曰。六年雪山錯。忽見明星錯。走下山來錯錯錯。假使九州之鐵。也難鑄這一錯。卓拄杖一下。大地含生成等正覺。泰定三年九月十五日召門弟子勉進德業已。書偈而逝。龕留一月顏貌如生。全身葬太湖之原。

> Lu of Hezhou Hanshan County, of the Zhou family, studied under Golden Ox at Yefu. Upon first entering the gate, Golden Ox shouted, and the master also shouted. Golden Ox said, "Where did you learn this empty trick?" The master said, "Many people have doubts about it." Golden Ox then struck him. The next day, Golden Ox met the master again and led him into a room to sit. Suddenly, the hot water bottle on the stove spilled onto the ashes, sending steam rushing upward. The master was suddenly enlightened, sweat pouring down his back. He immediately presented a verse, including the lines: "A mud buffalo at the bottom of the water roars once, the myriad worlds in the great trichiliocosm topple together." Golden Ox nodded in approval. In the year jiawu of the Zhiyuan era, he established a meditation center at Taihu called Puming. He also built hermitages at Xiliang Mountain and in Dangtu. The master traveled back and forth teaching; monks from all directions gathered like ants. At night, heavenly lamps shone down, astonishing everyone, but the master acted as if nothing had happened. The imperial preceptor specially bestowed upon him the title "Buddha's Radiance, Perfect Awakening." When the Buddha realized enlightenment, the master said to the assembly: "Six years on the snowy mountain—wrong. Suddenly seeing the morning star—wrong. Coming down the mountain—wrong, wrong, wrong. Even if all the iron in the nine provinces were used, it could not cast this mistake." He struck his staff once and said, "All sentient beings on the great earth become equally enlightened." On the fifteenth day of the ninth month in the third year of the Taiding era, he called his disciples and encouraged them to advance in virtue and practice. Then he wrote a verse and passed away. His body remained in the shrine for a month, his appearance as if alive. His full body was buried on the plains of Taihu.
