> Master Hui, whose secular surname was Xie, came from Linhai in Taizhou. He was a descendant of Prime Minister Fang Shu of the Song Dynasty. His father was named Yue, and his mother was from the Huang family. At age fifteen, he left home to study under Master Wen of Lingfeng Temple in Yin County and learned the Dharma. After shaving his head and receiving full ordination, he visited Master Shi of Tiantong Temple and served in the attendant's post. He then went to Jingshan to study under Zen Master Yuan Souduan and was promoted to the position of librarian. The Master observed that what he had realized was still within the realm of seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing—not ultimate truth. An elder mentioned that Master Dao of Zizhuo was a true master of the authentic teaching. At that time, Master Dao was old and had cut off all worldly affairs. When the Master arrived, the old master turned him away. This happened three times before he was finally accepted. One day, Master Dao used the story of Yuanzhao's response about the cypress tree in the courtyard to answer a monk's question about the ancient sail before it was hoisted. At that moment, the Master was suddenly enlightened and saw clearly through the function of all the ancestral masters from the past. In 1351, he came to the Mengtang Hall at Taibai Mountain and secluded himself in a room for meditation and recitation, maintaining a daily schedule. After a long time, the Imperial Courtissued an order for him to lead the congregation at Hongyou Temple in his hometown, and later he moved to Guoqing Temple. In the second year of Hongwu (1369), he was promoted to Tiantong Temple, where his teachings surpassed those of other places. Once, ascending the hall, he said, "Whatever arises from conditions eventually decays. That which does not arise from conditions remains through countless ages." He raised his whisk and said, "This pierces through Deshan's nostrils and changes Linji's eyes." Ascending the hall another time, he said, "Baizhang rolled up the mat. Mimo held up a fork. Nanquan killed a cat. Dasui burned a snake. Because the rhinoceros plays with the moon, patterns grow on its horn. When the elephant is startled by thunder, patterns enter its tusks." Another time, ascending the hall, he said, "All dharmas are the dharmas of all Buddhas. All paths are the paths of all Buddhas. All words are the words of all Buddhas. All actions are the actions of all Buddhas. In Jambudvipa, Uttarakuru, Godaniya, and Purvavideha—every family's door opens directly to Chang'an." He then struck the ground with his staff and descended. In the fifth year of Hongwu (1372), the Imperial Court held a grand open assembly at Zhongshan and summoned eminent monks from both Zhejiang regions to collate the Buddhist canon and handle ritual matters. The Master participated. He was repeatedly granted audiences and sat with the Emperor to discuss the Way. The Emperor requested him to give dharma talks to illuminate both the visible and invisible realms. When he returned east, he retired to the East Hall and called himself Dongyuan (Eastern Cloister). On the first day of the fourth month in the fourteenth year of Hongwu (1381), he entered nirvana at the age of seventy.
