> Master Zhanyuan Chanshi of Mingyin Temple, Zhitang, Suzhou

天曆改原。師在鳳山資福一源靈會中居前堂。秉拂云。翔鳳山前行。看白雲乍舒乍卷。禺泉亭上坐。聽流水或抑或揚。眼處作耳處佛事。耳處作眼處佛事。便見非唯觀世音。我亦從中證。已而一源云。有便見二字是與別人說話。無此二字方是自家說話。師不覺退席謂人曰。還丹一粒點鐵成金。堂頭之謂也。

> The calendar was reformed. The Master was residing in the front hall of the assembly at Yiyuan Linghui in Fengshan Zifu. Holding the whisk, he said: "Walking before Xiangfeng Mountain, watching the white clouds unfold and roll back at ease. Sitting by the Yuquan Pavilion, listening to the flowing water rise and fall. The eyes perform the Buddha-work of the ears; the ears perform the Buddha-work of the eyes. Then you see it's not only Guanyin—I too realize this from within." Afterward, Yiyuan said, "Those words 'realize this from within' are spoken to others. Without them, it would be one's own utterance." The Master, without a word, withdrew from his seat and remarked to someone, "A single pill of refined elixir turns iron into gold—that is what the abbot's words mean."
