> A native of Nanchang, the Master surnamed Deng. When he first met Master Yishan at Kai Xian Temple, during a service, Yishan turned to him and asked, "When Mazu ascended the hall and Baizhang rolled up the mat, what did that mean?" The Master replied in a loud voice, "Neither of them understood." Yishan recognized his potential. Later, he took leave and went to visit Huyan at Lingyin Temple. Huyan asked, "Where have you come from?" The Master said, "From Kai Xian in Lushan." Huyan said, "The Green Jade Gorge has swallowed the entire Avatamsaka world, and the Five Elders Peak has entered the eye of a lotus root thread. Do you understand this?" The Master replied, "Fortunately, the Venerable Master has confirmed it." Huyan was astonished. Not long after, Huyan moved to Jingshan, and the Master accompanied him as his attendant. After a long while, he went to Tiantong to serve as the scribe for Dongyan. When Huyan passed away, Zhuxi took over, and the Master was again appointed to share the teaching seat. He then went forth to teach at Miaoguo Temple in Poyang. Earlier, by imperial decree, thirty-six scholarly monks had been ordered to open lecture platforms at famous temples across the provinces. At Raozhou Miaoguo, when the Master arrived, he separated the Chan and scholastic teachings, establishing a separate temple for the latter, called Tianshou. The Wanan Teaching Temple became its main institution, and Kai Xian Temple in Lushan was renewed once again. When Zhongwu Chengtian Temple was restored, the Master was invited to take residence. Upon arriving, donors gathered in great numbers, and he amassed fine timber and strong materials. Every craftsman summoned was selected from the best in the realm, so that the halls and towers were magnificent, and the statues were splendidly adorned—unmatched in the Southeast. Later, Tanfang resided at Jingshan, and the dharma assembly there also flourished. A monk asked, "One who teaches the Dharma should teach according to the Dharma. What is teaching according to the Dharma?" The Master said, "Cotton wrapped around thorns, brocade enveloping a stone." The monk said, "I will now spread this widely." The Master said, "Do not pretend to be wise." At a formal assembly, he said: "The mighty function rests in the palm; the Giant Spirit splits open the peaks of Taihua. The bright mirror sits on its stand; the deluded one shatters the realm of confusion. Do you practitioners understand? A toad leaps to the Brahma heavens, and an earthworm crosses the Eastern Sea." At another assembly, he raised the story of a monk asking Zhaozhou, "What is the perfect circle of Vairocana?" Zhaozhou said, "I left home as a child, and my eyes have never played tricks on me." If someone asked him, "What is the perfect circle of Vairocana?" He would only reply, "Peach blossoms spread red brocade in the sun, and grass stretching to the horizon spreads a verdant mat." He finally passed away at Fayin Hermitage in Suzhou. His disciples carried his full body back and buried it on the eastern slope of Jingshan.
