> Master Mingji Chujun of Baolin Temple in Wuzhou

四明昌國黃氏。依虎巖於冷泉。一日巖見問曰是什麼。師拱而前曰和尚莫瞞某甲好。巖曰未在更道。師曰某甲無侍者祇對和尚。巖休去。住後上堂。好諸禪德。一切智通無障礙。五須彌山障礙你不得。百億剎土障礙你不得。四大海水障礙你不得。拈燈籠向佛殿裏。將山門來燈籠上。上堂。有時教伊揚眉瞬目。白雲萬里。有時不教伊揚眉瞬目。白雲萬里。有時教伊揚眉瞬目者是白雲萬里。有時教伊揚眉瞬目者不是白雲萬里。定林如此批判。還契得馬大師麼。白雲萬里。日本國王具書以國師禮聘至彼。對揚稱旨。命住鉅福山建長寺。示寂時年七十五歲。

> Fourth Ancestor, from the Huang family in Changguo, Mingzhou. He studied under Tiger Cliff at Cold Spring. One day, Tiger Cliff saw him and asked, "What is this?" The master stepped forward with palms together and said, "Master, please don't deceive me." Tiger Cliff said, "Not quite—say more." The master replied, "I have no attendant to speak for me before you, Master." Tiger Cliff let it go. After becoming abbot, he ascended the hall and said: "Good practitioners of Zen. The wisdom of all things penetrates without obstruction. The five Sumeru mountains cannot obstruct you. The billions of lands cannot obstruct you. The waters of the four great seas cannot obstruct you. Pick up the lantern and place it in the Buddha hall. Bring the mountain gate and hang it on the lantern." Ascending the hall again, he said: "Sometimes I have them raise their eyebrows and blink—white clouds stretch ten thousand miles. Sometimes I don't have them raise their eyebrows and blink—white clouds stretch ten thousand miles. Sometimes the one who has them raise their eyebrows and blink is the white clouds for ten thousand miles. Sometimes the one who has them raise their eyebrows and blink is not the white clouds for ten thousand miles. Dinglin critiques it this way. Does this measure up to Great Master Ma? White clouds for ten thousand miles." The King of Japan sent a formal letter, inviting him with the rites of a national teacher to come to his country. He responded to the king's inquiries fittingly, and the king appointed him to reside at Mount Jufu, at Kencho-ji Temple. When he passed away, he was seventy-five years old.
