> Dinghai native, with the secular surname Zhao. He studied under Zhuxi at Taibai. When he entered the master's chamber, Zhuxi asked, "You can't grasp it, you can't let it go. In what cannot be obtained, how do you obtain it?" The master immediately replied, "Why talk in your sleep?" Zhuxi swung his bamboo stick, and the master flicked his sleeves and withdrew. Zhuxi nodded in approval and appointed him as attendant. Later, he took charge of the scriptural treasury. He first resided at Kāishòu in Míng, then moved to Lóngxīng Shànglán, and was later promoted to Jiǎngshān. When Chancellor Chilie Zhenban of Jiangzhe visited the mountain to pay respects to Master Bao, he asked, "Was the Great Being born in an eagle's nest?" The master said, "Indeed, but you cannot deceive the Chancellor." The Chancellor then asked, "The Great Being has twelve faces—which is the true one?" The master drew a circle with his hand and said, "Majestic and grand, radiant and glorious. The painter Seng You would shrink his hand in awe, and Emperor Liang would find no door to peer through." The Chancellor had a realization and offered a brocade and a jade cup. In the thirteenth year of the Zhizheng era, the monastic assembly invited him to reside at Tiantong. He ascended the hall and said: "A rain clears the fiery clouds, A thousand peaks enjoy the cool afternoon breeze. In this quiet retreat, nothing to do— I lie back on a high pillow, at ease. All you practitioners of Chan: Know that illusions are already apart from you—no need for contrived methods. Once apart from illusions, awakening is immediate—no gradual stages. In a finger-snap, the eighty-four thousand gates are perfected; one leap enters directly into the Tathāgata's ground." Again ascending the hall, he cited the Fifth Patriarch's words: "One pulls out three, two adds four. The yellow ox's horns point to the sky, eight feet hang past the nose." The master then said, "Quick, quick!" And slapping the meditation bench, he said, "Having driven out the mouse, the oil jar is broken!"
