> Renouncing the world to safeguard blessings, I settled my mind in meditative stillness and arrived at Tiantong. Ascending the hall, I cited the story of Master Triangle. A monk asked, "What are the Three Jewels?" Triangle replied, "Grain, wheat, and beans." The Master said, "Triangle's answer was like using public property for personal enjoyment. Alas, the onlookers laugh. If someone suddenly asked me, Baofu, 'What are the Three Jewels?' I would simply say, 'The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.' Why? For a thousand illusions are not worth one reality." Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "When Sansheng said, 'When meeting someone, one comes forth, but coming forth, one does not act for others,' what about that?" The Master said, "What basis is there in that?" The monk asked, "When Xinghua said, 'When meeting someone, one does not come forth, but when coming forth, one acts for others,' what about that?" The Master said, "That's a bit closer." The monk said, "Past and present share one path; the awakened naturally walk the same way." The Master gave a shout. The monk bowed. The Master said, "Not so quick, you clumsy fellow!" Ascending the hall: "Luzu faced the wall; Xuefeng rolled a ball. When the string moves, the tune changes; when leaves fall, autumn is known. If you understand it this way, what then? A copper gong filled to the brim with oil." Ascending the hall: "The tune of Yunmen, played on the twenty-fifth of the twelfth month. Even if you grasp it directly, I dare not approve. Why? If you're not truly shooting the tiger, your arrow is wasted in vain." Ascending the hall: "Last night, this mountain monk had a dream, quite extraordinary. At dawn, I rose, intending to tell you all about it. But upon careful reflection, it slipped my mind again." Then he descended from the seat.
