> Master Chong of Dongshan Temple, Raozhou

上堂。趙州無。雲門普。雪峰毬。禾山皷。東山聻。黑漆拄杖七尺五。上堂。泥牛吞却南山虎。萬象森羅齊起舞。木人笑兮石女歌。露柱燈籠齊唱和。是何曲調萬年歡。上堂。春風習習。春日遲遲。是處桃花破萼。發明向上真機。堪悲堪笑靈雲老。打失眼睛鼻孔。剛道不疑。

> The master ascended the hall and said: "Zhaozhou's 'nothing,' Yunmen's 'universal,' Xuefeng's 'ball,' Heshan's 'drum,' Dongshan's 'what?'—and the black lacquered staff, seven feet five." The master ascended the hall and said: "The clay ox swallows the southern mountain tiger. All things in their splendor dance together. The wooden man laughs, the stone woman sings; the pillar and the lantern join in chorus. What tune is this? 'Ten Thousand Years of Joy.'" The master ascended the hall and said: "The spring breeze blows gently, the spring days grow long. Everywhere peach blossoms burst open, revealing the true principle that points upward. How pitiful, how laughable—old Lingyun, who lost his eyes and nose, still insisted he had no doubt."
