> Chang was a native of Wuxi. He was on very good terms with the Attendant Reader You Yu<note>Pronounced with the sixth tone; meaning "abundant."</note>. Initially, he resided at Benjue Temple in Jiahe. He then moved to Lingyan Temple in Suzhou and Huazang Temple in Changzhou. However, he stayed the longest at Wanshou Temple in Zhongwu, where the assembly swelled to over seven hundred practitioners, revitalizing the Dharma tradition there. He was subsequently appointed to Yuwang Temple in Mingzhou by imperial decree, and later specifically ordered to move to Lingyin Temple. A monk asked, "What about the moment of using function to illuminate the position?" The master said, "Before you even asked." The monk asked, "What about using position to illuminate function?" The master said, "The sun is everywhere, yet it's pitch black like lacquer." The monk asked, "Right now, is it using function to illuminate the position or using position to illuminate the function?" The master said, "It seems you've never even had a meal." The monk said, "I've come to this point where there's no way forward and no gate behind." The master said, "You're a grass thief." The monk said, "Today I've been caught red-handed." The master said, "Thirty blows—deferred to another time." The master ascended the hall and said, "Nature awareness is wondrously bright; original awareness is bright and wondrous. The jade phoenix gives birth to chicks in the frosty forest; the golden rooster crows at dawn from the moonlit door. This has always been the family style. Who truly arrives together with it? Arriving or not, they look up without raising their brows, lower their heads, and clap their hands laughing." The master ascended the hall and said, "Ten thousand sounds roar through the pine wind; a thousand forests send flying withered leaves. The toothless old barbarian from the West has gone without a trace." He picked up his staff and raised it, saying, "Now he's come—do you see him?" Returning it to its original place, he said, "Since all of you don't understand, he's gone back into Shaolin." On New Year's Eve, during a small assembly, he said, "When adversity reaches its peak, good fortune arrives. The plum blossom fragrance spreads; the spring valley is warm as the strength is exhausted and the position turns. The pine wind carries the sound across the cold night hall. The seasons are clear, coming and going have their certainty. This can be called the road where the burden is set down and the path opens to the fundamental principle. At such a time, what is it?" "The golden hoe does not move the soil, yet the spiritual sprouts grow everywhere." On the fifth day of the twelfth lunar month in the first year of the Baoyou era (1253 CE), he passed away. He wrote a verse to take leave of the assembly: "A patch of cloud gathers on the eastern valley, The full moon shines over the ancient ferry. The cold startles the white birds into flight, Night rests beneath the shadowless tree."
