> The master was from Ninghai in Taizhou. His family name is unknown. Among four brothers, he was the eldest. All four simultaneously resolved to leave home and become monastics. They distributed the ancestral estate entirely to relatives and clansmen, keeping only the house they lived in. When relatives quarreled endlessly over it, the master and his brothers each took torches and burned it down before leaving. The master later went on pilgrimage and attained profound insight into the ultimate. He appeared in the world teaching at Lingyun in Wenzhou. At the end of the summer retreat, he ascended the hall and said: "With the great perfect enlightenment, ox horns and horse horns are my monastery; melon baskets and vegetable baskets." Ascending the hall again, he cited the case of Zhaozhou's "dog has no Buddha-nature" and presented a verse: "The dog's Buddha-nature is absent. The dog's Buddha-nature is present. A monkey worries, scratching its head. A dog walks, shaking its mouth." In his later years, he retired to a grass hut in front of Lingyun Temple. In the year 1344, Wenzhong, who was also known as Yunsu, together with Dayuan, Mingxing, and Xingyuan, went to visit him. The master was then over ninety years old, with bushy eyebrows and white hair, tall and gaunt, appearing elegant and clear. Dragging his shoes, he came out, walking while asking: "Where have you come from?" Wenzhong replied: "From Jiangxin." The master asked: "How deep is it, in hundreds of feet?" Wenzhong said: "I cannot deceive the old master." The master greeted him with a bow and said: "Sit and drink tea." The master's nature was upright and principled. His poetry was quite similar to that of the hermit Hanshan. He wrote a verse on the wall mocking monks: "Without the five plagues striking, their heads are shaved bare. Wrapped in yellow cloth, they are then called monks. Understanding neither worldly dharma nor Buddha-dharma, Their ability at swilling like pigs and dogs is quite complete." Wenzhong and the others, when taking their leave, dared not provoke his sharp edge again. That evening they stayed at Lingyun and heard the elder monks recount several of the master's words and deeds, all of which were worthy of transmission.
