華言寶意。中天竺人。博文贍學。明悟禪理。以正始初。至洛陽。譯十地等論二十四卷。師領受華音。慧悟絕倫。帝每令講華嚴。精義頴發。甞處高座。忽有持笏執柬者。形如尊官云。天帝來請法師講華嚴經。都講維那。咸祈相赴。時講席眾僧同見之。師怡然微笑。告眾辭訣。化於法座。其都講等僧。亦同時入滅。觀此。知華嚴秘藏。天人無不宗重如是。
Huayan Baoyi was from Central India. He was widely read and deeply learned, and he clearly understood the principles of Chan. In the early Zhengshi era, he arrived in Luoyang and translated twenty-four fascicles of treatises, including the Treatise on the Ten Grounds. The master absorbed Chinese speech, and his wisdom and insight were unmatched. The emperor often had him lecture on the Flower Garland Sutra, and his exposition of its profound meaning was brilliant and penetrating. Once, as he was seated on the high platform, a figure suddenly appeared holding a tablet and a card, looking like a high official, and said, "The Heavenly Emperor has come to invite the Dharma Master to lecture on the Flower Garland Sutra. The chief lecturer and the karma master are also asked to come." At that time, the assembled monks in the lecture hall all saw this. The master smiled calmly, bade farewell to the assembly, and passed away while sitting on the Dharma seat. The chief lecturer and the other monks also entered cessation at the same time. From this, we know that the hidden treasure of the Flower Garland Sutra is revered by gods and humans alike in this way.
