> How is stillness defined and established? It is defined and established through four kinds of stillness, which constitute the ground of remaining in this life with residual attachment. First, stillness through the cessation of suffering; second, stillness through the cessation of afflictions; third, stillness through not harming living beings; fourth, stillness through equanimity. What is stillness through the cessation of suffering? It refers to an Arhat monk whose mental defilements have been completely exhausted. All future suffering that would arise from continued rebirth has been wholly cut off and fully understood. Just as a palm tree with its root and crown severed can never grow again, in the same way, because they have attained the state where no further rebirth will occur, this is called stillness through the cessation of suffering. What is stillness through the cessation of afflictions? It refers to an Arhat monk whose greed has been permanently eliminated, whose hatred has been permanently eliminated, whose ignorance has been permanently eliminated—all afflictions have been entirely eradicated. Because they have attained the state of ultimate non-arising, this is called stillness through the cessation of afflictions. What is stillness through not harming living beings? It refers to an Arhat monk whose greed has been completely exhausted, whose hatred has been completely exhausted, whose ignorance has been completely exhausted—all afflictions have been entirely exhausted. They do not commit any unwholesome deeds but diligently cultivate wholesome ones. This is called stillness through not harming living beings. What is stillness through equanimity? It refers to an Arhat monk whose mental defilements have been completely exhausted. They dwell continually and without interruption in the six constant abidings, remaining in them for the most part. That is, having seen forms with the eyes, they feel neither joy nor sorrow, abiding in superior equanimity with clear mindfulness and clear awareness. Likewise, having heard sounds with the ears, smelled fragrances with the nose, tasted flavors with the tongue, felt touch with the body, and cognized mental objects with the mind, they feel neither joy nor sorrow, abiding in superior equanimity with clear mindfulness and clear awareness. This is called stillness through equanimity. Based on these four kinds of stillness, the ground of remaining in this life with residual attachment is said to be supremely still and supremely cool. This is what is meant by the definition and establishment of stillness.
