九因者，謂能解脫九種世間逼迫事故。一、能出生死大牢獄故。二、永斷貪等堅牢縛故。三、棄捨七財貧，建立七財富故。四、超度善行聞正法儉，建立善行聞正法豐故。五、滅無明闇，起智慧明故。六、度四暴流，昇涅槃岸故。七、究竟能療煩惱病故。八、解脫一切貪愛羂故。九、能度無始生死曠野稠林行故。諸牢獄中，生死牢獄最為第一，是故先說。

> The Nine Causes refer to the ability to be freed from nine kinds of worldly suffering and oppression. First, one can escape the great prison of birth and death. Second, one can permanently cut off the tightly bound fetters of desire and other defilements. Third, one can abandon poverty in the seven kinds of spiritual wealth and establish abundance in them. Fourth, one can transcend scarcity in virtuous practice and hearing the true Dharma, and establish abundance in these. Fifth, one can extinguish the darkness of ignorance and bring forth the light of wisdom. Sixth, one can cross the four torrents and ascend to the shore of Nirvana. Seventh, one can ultimately cure the illness of afflictions. Eighth, one can be released from all snares of craving and attachment. Ninth, one can traverse the vast wilderness and dense thickets of beginningless birth and death. Among all prisons, the prison of birth and death is foremost, so it is spoken of first.
