> Furthermore, those who aspire to realize the truth and delight in full awakening should understand that, through the powerful influence of the Four Noble Truths, there are three things to be attained: a foundation, the attainment itself, and the means to attain it. Know this: When one, with pure faith, leaves home life within the well-taught Dharma and discipline, this is called the foundation. The three kinds of awakening—namely, the awakening of disciples as encompassed by the four stages of attainment, the awakening of solitary realizers, and the unsurpassed awakening of Thus-Gone Ones—these three are called the attainment. As for the threefold turning of the wheel as spoken of earlier—namely, knowledge, insight, and direct realization—these are called the means to attain it. One should know that at the moment of entering direct realization of the truths, one truly understands: "This is the noble truth of suffering," and likewise, in detail, "This is the noble truth of the path." This is called the stage of knowledge. After this, within the truths there remains further work to be done: what is to be fully understood must be fully understood, and in detail, what is to be cultivated must be cultivated. Through this contemplation, it is called the stage of insight. At the stage of no further learning, one truly understands: "I have fully understood, I have completely abandoned, I have directly realized, I have cultivated." This is called the stage of direct realization. There is another distinction: All the fully liberated wisdom included in the knowledge of exhaustion and the knowledge of non-arising, belonging to those who have nothing further to learn, is called the stage of knowledge. The right view that arises from this fully liberated wisdom of the non-learner is called the stage of insight. And from the stage of stream-entry up to the final attainment, all the wisdom of those still in training is to be known as the stage of direct realization.
