> There are three kinds of roots that obstruct all wholesome states of mindfulness, and they are known as the accumulation of unwholesome qualities. What are these three? First, the root of unwholesome conduct, which leads to future suffering in the lower realms. Second, the root of discursive thought, which causes present suffering and restlessness. Third, the root of roots, which serves as the foundation for both the root of unwholesome conduct and the root of discursive thought, and is thus called the root of roots. It should be understood that the three unwholesome roots—greed, hatred, and delusion—serve as the basis for unwholesome bodily and verbal actions. The three perceptions related to desire and so forth serve as the basis for discursive thoughts of desire and the like. And the three realms—the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm—should be understood as the foundation for the three roots of greed and so forth, as well as for the three roots of desire-perception and the like.
