> Master's Final Memorial

> I respectfully observe that this limited physical body cannot escape the sighs of flourishing and decay. The formless true reality—who can speak of times of change? Since the wind-lamp flame is hard to keep, and the moon-on-water flower has nowhere to go, I do not avoid blame for violating conventions, and will now present these words of casting off the mortal shell. Your minister, with folded hands, humbly states: My origins were humble, born among the grasses and wilds. From childhood, I deeply aspired to the gate of emptiness. With pure sincerity, I vowed to set aside all other pursuits, and with keen resolve sought only to explore the inner scriptures. Sometimes I forgot meals while awaiting answers, or stood in snow to seek knowledge. I endured wind and frost for seventeen years, traversing north and south across several thousand miles. Only then did I see the mind-monkey cease its leaping and the will-horse rest its galloping. My body nestled in the clouds of Shaoshi, my head whitened with the snows of Mount Chu. Then I was graced with fortunate times, repeatedly bathed in imperial favor. Discussing the Way and expounding emptiness, I vowed to repay the virtue of heaven and earth. Opening the ignorant and unblocking the stalled, I rushed like clouds and water to those seeking truth. Any benefit I gained in spreading the Dharma came wholly from the sage ruler's benevolence. Moreover, I was repeatedly honored with imperial edicts, frequently appearing before the dragon court. Again and again, I received proclamations and abundant gifts. Reflecting on myself, I feel deep disquiet—how could I repay such grace even with my death? But now, like a worn-out horse, my years have aged, and I can hardly bear such boundless imperial kindness. Suddenly I am bound by exhaustion and illness, awaiting only the end between dawn and dusk. The Milky Way stretches far ahead—I gaze with difficulty toward the Northern Star. The waves rush away swiftly—turning my head, I already follow the eastward flow. I humbly pray that the imperial calendar may long endure in spring, spreading the sovereign's grace through eons as vast as stone-grinding time. May the dragon reign stand forever firm, matching in longevity the citadel of mustard seeds. But your minister's remaining light has no time left; this humble body is about to depart. I cannot rush to bid farewell at the vermilion gates or take leave at the crimson court. Your minister, unable to contain his gaze toward heaven and longing for the sage, is deeply stirred with reverence and awe. Respectfully, I present this memorial for your attention.
