> The Master asked a monk, "You arrived early but did not come forward; you lagged behind at the end." The monk was about to pick up his sitting mat. The Master pointed and said, "Setting aside the mat, how would you speak?" The monk said, "Where did you get this news from, Master?" The Master then struck him. The monk tried to pick up his mat again. The Master struck him again and said, "Blind fellow." The monk hesitated. The Master struck him yet again and said, "Sit down and have some tea." The monk sat down. The Master asked, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "Stone Frost." The Master said, "No wonder." The Master asked another monk, "I have a matter to ask you about, but you must not strike me." The monk said, "What reason is there for that?" The Master lifted his mat and said, "What about this?" The monk said, "Don't act recklessly." The Master then struck him. The monk said, "Don't act recklessly! Don't act recklessly!" The Master struck him again and said, "Sit down and have some tea." The monk said, "I just said 'What reason is there for that?' Why did you strike me, Master?" The Master said, "Where did you go just now?" The monk was silent. The Master then pounded his chest once. The Master asked a monk, "We already met at the estate yesterday. How do you handle today's greetings?" The monk said, "Shut your dog's mouth." The Master said, "That works too." The monk then struck him. The Master said, "Where was my fault?" The monk said, "A second offense won't be forgiven." The Master then said, "I thought you were someone special." The Master then struck him and said, "Go to the meditation hall." Several newly arrived monks paid their respects. The Master said, "All of you are monks from the Zhe region." A monk said, "A monkey warming itself by the fire." The Master said, "Why bounce around like that?" The monk said, "Today we finally get to see you, Master." The Master said, "May you be well fed." The monk was silent. The Master then struck him. Once, when the Master was in the assembly at Master Ciming's, he carried a basket of snails and walked around the courtyard, calling out, "Snails for sale!" He asked the assembly to respond with a saying, but none were fitting. An elder monk lifted the curtain, saw this, looked at the Master, and lay down flat. The Master set down the basket and walked away. The Master asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "From the meditation hall." The Master said, "What does the holy monk say?" The monk stepped forward and said, "Hello." The Master said, "In the east house, a donkey; in the west house, a horse." The monk said, "Where's the fault?" The Master said, "Ten thousand miles to Yazhou." The Master asked a monk, "Where are you from?" The monk said, "From the shrine room." The Master said, "What kind of face does old Shakyamuni have?" The monk shouted. The Master said, "What now?" The monk shouted again. The Master said, "Exactly so." The monk said, "I can bounce around all I want." The Master struck him. One day, a newly arrived monk paid his respects and said, "Please, Master, take a look at me." The Master said, "Not easy to say. Sit and have some tea." An envoy from Le Tan paid his respects and said, "De Hua bows." The Master said, "Another monk from Zhe." The monk said, "No need for such words." The Master said, "It still carries the old flavor." The monk said, "Yes." The Master said, "Setting aside 'yes,' what else?" The monk was silent for a while, then said, "I can bounce around all I want." The Master clapped once. One day, the Master was unwell. While a monk was paying his respects, he asked, "How is your honored seat these days, Master?" The Master said, "The rice cook is useless." The monk was silent. The Master snapped his fingers once. The official Wang, Judicial Commissioner, asked Lian of Three Lives, "I've been an official for forty years. How can I escape this dust?" Lian had no reply. The Master answered for him: "Just bounce around as you please." Then they looked at the mountain path ahead. Lian said, "This is the upper peak path." The official said, "Is the temple up above?" Lian said, "Yes." The official said, "If so, then I'm not going." Lian was silent. The Master answered for him: "Today I've seen through you."
