> The Diamond Sutra: The Perfection of Wisdom

> The term "Vajra" reveals the Buddha's indestructible heart-mind, which can sever doubt. With worldly, ordinary understanding, people cannot comprehend the Buddha. In daily life and actions, everything about him differs from ordinary people, so it is natural for them to see him and feel doubt. Even among his disciples, some doubted the teachings he spoke, finding them hard to believe and difficult to understand. Now, fortunately, Subhūti glimpsed a part of the World-Honored One’s nature and suddenly burst into praise. Thus, the World-Honored One, responding to that doubt, shattered it— laying bare his own indestructible heart-mind, so that all who heard it would see their doubts cut off at once. Moreover, this heart-mind can sever the afflictions of all beings. Thus Maitreya’s twenty-seven doubts were severed, and the meaning was revealed without remainder.

> The Buddha taught the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra in six hundred volumes, comprising sixteen assemblies. This is the five hundred and seventy-seventh volume, the ninth assembly held at the Garden of Solitary Offering. The vajra is a diamond-like scepter held by the guardians of the Dharma, extremely hard and sharp, capable of shattering anything. Its hardness symbolizes the essence of wisdom, while its sharpness represents the function of wisdom.

> The Prajna teachings say: Wisdom is the unwavering light of awareness, clear and empty, shining with divine insight. This is the innate true nature of enlightenment that everyone possesses.

> The Paramita is said to be reaching the other shore. To see one's true nature and attain liberation is to reach the other shore; to not yet attain liberation is to remain on this shore. In truth, the other shore is a place inherently present—it is the ultimate depth of this very mind.

> Sentient beings, with their karma and deluded consciousness, drift in the vast, boundless sea of suffering. Yet the sea must flow from the shore, just as afflictions originally arise from wisdom. Only by transforming endless afflictions into boundless wisdom can one reach the other shore. Yet arriving is originally non-arriving; it is simply that the deluded fail to realize this themselves. <note>The Perfection of Wisdom teaches: wisdom dispels ignorance. Therefore, both wisdom and ignorance lack a fixed essence. Realizing this mind, even ignorance is wisdom. Being deluded about this mind, even wisdom is ignorance.</note>

> The Sutra is the path, the way to reach the other shore. The Sutra is that which can thread together and gather in—threading together the meanings that should be spoken, gathering in the beings to be transformed. Over two thousand years since the Buddha's passing, the true Dharma has not been scattered or lost—this is the Sutra's threading together. Beings wander through the six realms, yet by following its teachings, all return to the true path—this is the Sutra's gathering in.

> A sutra is traditionally divided into three parts: first, the introductory section; second, the main teaching section; and third, the transmission and practice section.
